Random movie reckons. Mostly genre pictures, Gialli, French and Italian crime movies, horror from '30s-'60s

Known in the business as the Whispering Giant, but my eyes are quite hard
The hall should only be accessible via MetroLink also

I do like St Patrick's Hall but did think the Millennium Wing of the National Gallery felt like an attempt at a proper 'national building' style

We got Art Deco in '42 with the Department of Enterprise. And I don't know if this is true but I recall being told it was designed with extra wide corridor, which had rounded corners in case it ever needed to be used as a field hospital

Can a man not just want to feel pretty?!

I thought about a compare & contrast but I don't have it in me after my recent Sleuth rant

So bad it's the shorthand for bad Hollywood remakes

Yay!

Yeah it's incredibly strong, & even if people haven't seen this the remake is so legendary in its badness that most people are aware of it through osmosis

No & it adds a different flavour of dread knowing where it's going but it's definitely one where there are 2 very different viewing experiences depending on what you know

And I've just remembered I know plot because my Dad told me all about it after he saw it, when I would have been 9 or 10! 🤣

I love that I knew where that story was going as soon as you said Marlborough Street

I was really impressed by how the movie subtly demonstrates, through performance & character design, the way evil acts diminish those who commit them

Villains are often portrayed as either extravagantly evil or banal nonentities, but here we see someone unmistakably degraded by what they've done

Slightly odd not wanting to say more to avoid spoiling a 37 year old widely known & acclaimed movie, but I think I would have enjoyed it even more had I not known the plot in advance

Me, Irish Civil Servant talking to an NI Civil Servant in the early '00s

Me: And the proposed venue?

NI: Londonderry

Me: We're fine meeting in Derry

NI: Yes Londonderry

Me: Ok, Derry as the venue & what date were you thinking of

NI: The 14th, in Londonderry

Me: The 14th in Derry it is so

Or failing that, have a predecessor so manifestly dire, so abjectly unpopular, that you could credibly blame them even for the stuff that wasn't their fault

Unless you piss that opportunity away

He's done a couple of audio adaptations of Poirot, which are fun & which make more sense now that you say that
November 13, 2025 at 10:07 PM
I'm sceptical but I think yeah it has to effectively be a new show with a re-imagined character. Like in the new version Charlie Cale is, on a day-to-day basis, just a real dick about being a human lie detector, & only uses his power for good when he's dragged kicking & screaming into a mystery

My favourite thing about it, apart from the performances & music, is that when a surrogate character for a famous person is introduced, the movie doesn't metaphorically dig you in the ribs with its elbow & say 'D'ya get it? It's supposed to be That Guy! D'ya get it? D'ya get it?'

Brilliantly done
