Today is the feast of Saint Francis, which is celebrated with elegance in Zacoalco, Jalisco, México, a place where many of my ancestors lived. If you’re so inclined, take your animals to church today for a blessing. Mine won’t be going because they’re uncooperative. Such are cats.
CANTICLE OF THE CREATURES In Zacoalco de Torres, during the month of the dead, the Confraternity of the Moors leads an impassioned celebration. This Catholic mutual aid society spends days honoring the town's spiritual guardian, Saint Francis of Assisi. Pope Gregory IX canonized Francis in 1228, just two short years after his death from malaria. A stone sarcophagus received his sanctified remains. A poet, Francis wrote Canticle of the Creatures one year before his death. In this hymn, he addresses the sun, the moon, and the heavens as family. He also addresses Death as kin, an inescapable relative. Francis famously preached to nonhumans. He once delivered a sermon to POPPY STATE Friar Thomas of Celano authored three Franciscan hagiographies. In The Remembrance of the Desire of a Soul, he describes Francis monastic garden: "He commands the gardener to leave the edges of the garden undug so that in their season the greenness of the grass and the beauty of the flowers may proclaim the beauty of the Father of all. It is designated that within the garden there be a smaller garden for aromatic and flowering plants so that those who see them may be diverted by the memory of the eternal sweetness." This garden is probably a literary device. A concrete statue of Francis sunbathes on my parents' back patio. He wears Snow White's favorite accessory. A bird. In 1550, Franciscan friars brought Jesus to the Province of Avalos.
