Settling in
Ollie, a gray and white cat with pink ears and nose, curled up inside a cardboard box filled with a black winter coat and green crocheted scarf. His eyes are closed in a smugly comfortable expression Ollie snoozing in a closet on top of a gray sweatshirt with the hem of a lighter gray cardigan with a dark gray button brushing the top of his head. If his back and head patches weren’t greige and his ears and nose weren’t pink this would look like a grayscale photo Ollie on top of a white wooden bathroom cupboard, only the top 1/3 of his head and part of his butt and tail visible over the edge. It stays nice and toasty in this bathroom and he immediately runs in to leap on top of this cupboard when he knows you’re about to take a shower Ollie in a messy pile of his toys we dumped on the living room floor to keep him busy and out from under our feet while we’re unpacking and organizing. He’s seen from the back here because he’s kicking the shit out of one of his little flappy birds

Yesterday marked the first year of my life without the dirty, sickly stray who saw me across an Orlando parking lot and liked my vibe enough that he decided right then we were going to be friends

I had to make him a blankey cave (to his extremely exacting specifications) every time I stripped the bed for laundry The cat peering over his shoulder in the morning light from an open window. This was when we were housesitting for my parents the summer of the OceanGate disaster. He always loved being on neighborhood watch, especially if there were children playing outside The cat lying peacefully in dappled sunshine on the same gray and white quilt. I think this was the last good summer he had. He loved the sun and the sun loved him

My couch cushions! The faux velveteen is startlingly nice quality for where they came from (a Kroger Halloween bin pre-COVID!!!) and the pattern is much subtler irl, I had to fool with the brightness to make the skulls stand out. They’re on the couch all year tho lol

Very old and faded painted signpost on the back corner of a brick building adjacent to Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia. It reads “VICTORY RUG CLEANING” in red paint with an arrow pointing right that says “TURN LEFT” under it. Under that text in green paint and gothic lettering is “Hollywood Cemetery”, with another arrow pointing the same way The effigy memorial stone of Dave Brockie, former lead of beloved local metal band/constant source of national controversy GWAR. It’s a long rectangular slab of gray granite into which is carved a portrait of Brockie in fantasy armor with his hands folded over the pommel of a fantasy greatsword. It’s inscribed with his name, birth and death years, and a short poem about life The elaborate white stone mausoleum of Lewis Ginter, one of our many local historical rich dudes who left our city some excellent museums and botanical gardens. If you come visit you should see the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden first so when you visit Hollywood you can be like oh hey this guy I had a really good Cuban sandwich at his cafe yesterday Our beautiful but tragically feces-infected James River, as seen from the path to the Palmer Chapel at the rear of Hollywood. It was a perfect cool October day, and even a not-great visit to Hollywood is still a pleasant, peaceful hike through acres of rolling wooded parkland. Please come visit sometime!
