you can get really far with a rigid heddle loom (I'm using the Ashford knitter's loom in this post) and they have great tabletop options like the sampleit/cricket looms.

well in the simplest terms, one position lifts up every other string and pushes down every other string. you pass a thread through, beat down, then lift the opposite. you do this enough times, bam. fabric.
there's a lot of other complex weaves you can do on looms too!
