I think it's more like just eating non mouldy bread, but everyone's free to do whatever they like. It's free and open source, roll your own version if you wish

I fkn hate genAI with the fire of a thousand suns. It's not just "unobtrusive", it doesn't work at all unless you go out of your way to generate and link your own API key/token.

Have a look in the Customize section of each plugin. None of them do anything unless you have gone out of your way to generate an API key/token and set it up

It's strictly opt-in. To have an AI-free Calibre all you have to do is not jump through the hoops you would need to jump through in order to link it to an AI provider.
I'm fully up to date and there's no AI anywhere in my install.

So don't use it? You have to jump through hoops in order to enable any AI in Calibre, it's not there by default. It's not feeding AI anything at all unless you take specific actions to do so.
This is WAY different from the opt-out (or not even opt-out-available) AI foisted upon us everywhere else.
