people died for birthright citizenship. i get that it’s more fun to be a pundit when your team has the white house and you get to brag to friends about visiting the oval office; but what i’m wondering is if maybe that’s actually not a good reason to throw away something we fought a civil war to win?

I wrote about the race to stop octopus farming before it starts. This issue has been covered a fair amount, so I wanted to look at one under-covered aspect of it -- why do so many people who study octopuses, and are fascinated by them, support farming them?

This is 100% true. If you live in NYC, you should join your local community board — right now they’re much richer, older, whiter, more conservative, and more likely to be drivers+homeowners than the communities they represent.

That distorts our politics on every issue, especially housing.
I really can't emphasize enough that if you care about local politics, all you gotta do is show up. Just a regular schmegular person showing up. Literally just show up consistently in person and within a remarkably short amount of time, you will have a shocking amount of influence.

Something I have not seen said (tho surely it has been) is that even if we were somehow in a war, it’s disgusting and shameful to use the fog of war excuse for people who are sitting comfortably on their asses in well-furnished rooms deciding to kill others remotely.

@handsoffnyc.bsky.social is training thousands of New Yorkers on how to protect their neighbors from ICE. Today, they are currently running two trainings in Brooklyn and the Bronx, both of which hit capacity because interest was so high.

This is the way, y’all—we protect each other, and we know it.

To say this for the 50th time, for anyone who doesn't know:

Three young conservative lawyers were part of the GOP "Florida recount" team that led to GWB becoming president, via Bush-v-Gore.

They were: John Roberts. Brett Kavanaugh. Amy Coney Barrett.

Small world.

I actually read the district court's 160-page opinion. That seems to be more than what SCOTUS did.

It's an extremely impressive opinion, by the way—all the more so given the very short timetable. And even though there's a lot of dense legal discussion, it's a model of clarity. Worth your time.

It's good—very good, and very important—that district courts keep issuing these 100-page rulings upholding the law. It must be incredibly dispiriting to see them overturned in a two-page, lawless, unsigned order, but please, keep them coming. They expose SCOTUS' corruption like nothing else.
