Why do people write additional posts to correct typos instead of just deleting the original and re-posting it? is there some algorithm that makes such re-done posts less visible?

"Starship" is quite a name for a rocket that can't even escape low-earth orbit. Maybe it's a tribute to the rock band
Starship doesn’t have enough launch fuel to escape low-earth-orbit, so SpaceX’s plan for Artemis III is to launch one, and then launch a bunch more Starships (at least 14!!) with a cargo of extra fuel, and gradually refuel the first one in orbit so it can get it the moon

That’s the actual plan

The dirty secret of pies is that they have the lowest ceiling potential of all sweets. Your best pie is merely fine. Your median pie is bad.

haven’t seen ROS or Solo but this seems like a pretty ball-knowing list from Pritzker, particularly if he volunteered the name “Star Wars” rather than “A New Hope”

Huh.

A volcano in Ethiopia where there is no record of eruption for about the last ~10,000 - 12,000 years (short on geological timescales) erupted and there happened to be an Earth Observing satellite overhead at the time to catch it!

[alt-text: images showing volcanic plume rising from eruption]
An explosive #eruption of Hayli Gubbi #volcano, located SE of Erta'Ale in the Afar Rift (Ethiopia), began at ~08:30 UTC on Nov 23. Eruption onset was fortuitously captured by a @planet.com overpass at 08:31 UTC. Hayli Gubbi has no record of Holocene eruptions. Toulouse VAAC reporting ash to ~15 km.

I note that the Trump Administration has issued 212 Executive Orders. Nowhere on the #LPSC2026 page does it state which of these EOS abstracts are required to be compliant with, or how this will be determined.

Thanks to Chris Young at Interesting Engineering for the chance to contextualize 3I/ATLAS. I would have preferred two thumbnails of the comet itself, but... enjoy.

Harvard professor Avi Loeb claims 3I/ATLAS could be an alien spacecraft. Arizona State University professor Steven Desch is sure it isn't.

I urge every single person submitting an abstract, no matter the topic, to end with the sentence: "Also, DEI is good, actually"
Abstracts submitted to LPSC 2026 are required to comply with White House (non-legally binding) executive orders forbidding mention of topics related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

At least USRA/LPI isn't hiding it.

But is this what our community wants? Or deserves? I don't think so.

Finally got a website up for my research group at ASU. Not too much there yet (except complete publication list). I despise "The [PI] Lab" naming scheme that is rapidly taking over physical science, and also cute acronyms, so I have a dumb acronym (L'Group for Larry's group) 🧪
