Then extend that to one block prior/after and test until you find a sweet spot where a careless player will get punished but a carefully one could see their incoming doom?

If you can detect what tiles are the transition stages (inside to outside and the other way around) then perhaps you could play with transparencies/opacities (outer layer becomes more see through the closer you're to the inside area, and the other way around).
