Some final thoughts on Renegades, I guess.

tldr - I'm kinda sad, disappointed and nostalgic for what could have been

sorry if that's not how you feel.
Generally, for a story that never needed to happen within d2 setting, Renegades weren't bad. Some parts were better than others (Eris's banter, Eido, Aunor's character development, Bael/Drifter/Lodi dynamic), some - questionable at best (Drifter and his Ghost's story was retconned for no reason, and felt like unnecessary sanitizing good lore; Guardians hiding behind frames - ???, Praxic blades suddenly being lightsabers that we've never seen or heard about before etc etc). Furthermore, it seems like the Guardian's identity is being intentionally dumbed down and erased each DLC, with Bungie seemingly doubling down on their intent to give the player zero agency and personality by literally reducing the Guardian to "the weapon" - a silent, mindless shadow of a person, whose entire role in any story is shooting the biggest and the loudest gun and doing fetch quests. It feels more and more out of place and just extremely uninteresting to follow. I understand that Renegades only happened because the studio had to make a Star Wars ad with what seems like a whole laundry list of specific beats and scenes that we could all Leo DiCaprio point at and think "wait this is just like in that there movie", and for what it is, it's not bad at all. But because of this, we now have a story that's forever changed by a needless crossover. I don't know how I feel about that, to be honest. I guess it's good that it's all happening after the Light and Dark saga? Either way, I'm grateful I had the option to watch the full playthrough from someone who understands my love for dialogue and cutscenes and wasn't rushing through things or talking over it. But to even think of comparing this story to even the "weakest" points in d2's history would be disingenuous. I'm glad some SW fans are happy, I suppose, but if d2 is now a game that's just weaving crossovers into its story because they'll bring in some cash, I'm glad I'm no longer part of its audience.

few thoughts on Bael too (a bit more positive)
Something I did like about Renegades, all things considered, was the making of a villain. Personally, a villain who's actually just Some Guy is a lot more compelling than yet another godlike entity or some overpowered alien emperor or whatever. And yes I do acknowledge that VI is still in the picture. Two things I liked about Bael's story is that he turns out to be some random fella who happened to go through major trauma which served as basis for his eventual villainhood; and that his motives would be pretty reasonable if it wasn't for that specific trauma and his subsequent turn to evil ways. For what it's worth, humanity's current 'government' is incredibly flawed. The factions were pretty awful, but the Alliance is even worse - with other races being actually represented by their elected leaders while Humanity is not. Guardians are de facto rulers without ever being elected or challenged. Bael's hatred for the Light shouldn't be excused but is understandable. Losing someone you love, having time to grief, and then seeing them alive only to realize they'll never remember you could drive anyone nuts. When that same 'force' prints out superhumans who essentially rule over you by the right of their power, it would only radicalize you more. That's not to say his *actions* could be excused, but his motives can definitely be understood. And that story is lot more interesting to unravel than another big bad who wants to rule the world because they want to. If anything, I would be curious to know if the Vanguard eventually acknowledges how flawed their system is and puts some form of elections in place to ensure proper reflection and transition of power. After all, it's been hundreds of years and over a dozen crises in the past few, humanity should be more than well-adjusted to do more than simple survival by now. We had the factions, we saw how flawed they were. Maybe it's time to rebuild the society to reflect that power - Light, or otherwise - does not and should not equal leadership.

Our conversation with @psalmlab.bsky.social inspired me to write some words about Aunor's involvement in d2's current story so these here are SPOILERS for Renegades campaign, proceed with caution

Wrote about why Osiris worked where Aunor doesn't.
Let me start by saying I actually enjoyed Aunor's writing and character growth so this isn't coming from someone who just dislikes her lol A lot of people whined about Lightfall being "bad" but IMO it actually gave us some incredible writing (and acting!) in Osiris and his story. With both him and Aunor becoming "the DLC's mentor" for the Guardian, I wanted to point out why Osiris's journey made sense within the story while Aunor's journey seems forced (haha force) and out of place. At the time of Lightfall's events, Osiris is very much struggling with his place among the Guardians - being lightless and losing what essentially made up a huge part of his life and personality, let alone a close friend (plus, obviously, the aftermath of him being Savathun's puppet etc etc). TLDR he goes through a TON of character development prior to the DLC's events - and not just in obscure lore books, but alongside our Guardian, with their involvement. So when Lightfall happens, we've already been familiar with Osiris since the CoO storyline and basically throughout the years after that. Him becoming our mentor isn't some coincidence, it's a direct result of many, many events involving both our characters (and others). It also serves as an important character development for him. The LF story begins with him being reckless, pushing people away, acting like he still has the Light (and being pissed that he actually doesn't), and being generally insufferable to anyone who wasn't with him all these years and isn't attached to him as a character. Gradually, he finds meaning in teaching the Guardian how to master Strand - something that many people disliked about the DLC but something that genuinely plays really well into his story and ours. You can *feel* the change in his demeanor as he teaches us and finds himself to be useful, powerful and important - even without his Light. It's a beautiful story, regardless of how you feel about Lightfall as an expansion. So why doesn't Aunor's story feel the same? There are two reasons. 1) We only interact with her - indirectly - during Drifter's allegiance quest (a perfect example of how even an illusion of player agency can actually make the Guardian's actions feel important and impactful - if only Bungie realized how desperately the game needs it). From that, we pretty much just learn how zealous she is and how much she dislikes Drifter and his shenanigans. After that however, she's only found in lore books and tabs, and we don't interact with her for six whole years. The only opinion of her character comes from something we *may or may not read* in the game or elsewhere, not from our personal experience with her. 2) When it's convenient for Bungie to introduce a character that gives us a lightsaber though, she's suddenly front and center. Not in Beyond Light, when we first started using Stasis. Not in Lightfall, when we started using Strand. Not in any other storyline where the Guardian gets dangerously close to using the Darkness powers. It's only when we need to witness a cinematic lightsaber duel and think "wow I want that thing too". Later on, when she offers to become our mentor, we don't even get to choose how to respond to that - she just leaves. No "yeah I actually wanted to join the Order", no "I don't like your methods but I'm in no position to argue right now" - nothing. It is assumed that we're okay with some stranger showing us the ropes, however redundant that may be. She doesn't really *teach* us anything either - it's just a promise of a mentorship that we didn't choose to accept, and it changes nothing about how we approach the rest of the story. Now, again, I do enjoy her writing and character growth. But she feels like an excuse to give the player a lightsaber, instead of a character who actually needed to be there - for us, or for others. And to me it just feels like a wasted opportunity, especially given the multiple retcons that never needed to happen.
