A thread of books I finish in 2025

Book 1

Lesson:

The problems of the future will be solved by people who are young today observing issues and deciding to invent solutions.

diminishing returns to AI scale are an illusion

Economic value comes from completing long projects, not single questions. And accuracy drives how long a project AI does: small gains compound exponentially!

Reasoners are much more accurate, with big impacts

NEW: Reddit banned an anti-natalist group after the Palm Springs explosion

Archived posts in the group showed members discussing how to accelerate the end of society.

Picked up a few comic books for my birthday last week

Hickman's Secret Wars was pretty solid, excited for the MCU movie take on it in a few years

But WOW Brian Michael Bendis's Daredevil run is so so good, already like 40%+ through the omnibus collection

I bet Claude and o3 can write good-enough COBOL
Welfare for mid level management people and skilled workers we need so we can plug and play. Whole farms of people we pay to do nothing but keep their COBOL skills sharp funded by whatever rich libs we can shake down or guilt into helping. That sort of thing.

What do people mean when they say “nobody asked for” AI
Almond milk: tastes okay, provides nutrition and hydration
Social media: addictive, toxic in large doses, occasionally useful for organizing and connecting
AI: over valued garbage that nobody asked for, has seeped into every corner of life, enshitification

Rebuilt an iPod mini I got for free on Facebook

Always wanted one growing up. In sixth grade I’d pay this kid Cullen $1 to use his on the bus ride home

Another facet of using these tools that puts demands on the user: using them to learn or work faster while still always asking yourself, “could it know this?”
That admittedly does sound like pretty human behavior:

Prior eras we compare to didn't have social media
One major limitation on autocracies is that they replace the free press entirely with synchophants, with insulates the regime from external critique and also externally verifiable facts on the ground.

It is, ahem, the Emperor's News Clothes, and it works to cloak the administration until it doesn't
