It’s not often that I find myself recommending Oprah, but this is a powerful insight into how far-right movements benefit from being given mainstream media platforms, despite the best intentions of the journalist to “hold them to account”

This was a nice surprise!

Feeling incredibly lucky and privileged to be part of a successful ARC Discovery Project application ❤️

I spoke to the ABC about the white nationalist March for Australia rallies taking place this weekend

But one unfortunate downside of researching the far right is being referred to as “a far-right researcher” in the media

🚨 We have a new article out in Political Studies

Will hopefully be of interest to scholars of the far-right, party politics, social movements, and anyone drawing breath really

Led by the excellent Imogen Richards, & Callum Jones & with Jordan McSwiney & me

List some examples of research impact

Me: Uhh, I’m one of the citations on Laura Loomer’s Wikipedia page?

🚨 Neo-Nazis were allowed to set the media and political agenda for a week during the Australian election

We wrote about the abhorrent Welcome to Country stunt and the critical failure of the media in the ABC’s Religion & Ethics

The biggest media loser from #AusVotes2025 is Sharri Markson:

Claimed the polls were wrong, called a Labor majority “a fantasy”, parroted “high level” Liberal sources suggesting they’d win 65 seats and even insinuated that her own organisation’s Newspoll was rigging their polls in favour of Labor
May 4, 2025 at 8:40 AM
A textbook case of neo-Nazi agenda setting in three parts:

1. Neo-Nazi disrupts a Welcome to Country on ANZAC day

2. Conservative media: Well I don’t agree with their methods, but they’re right on the issue

3. Opposition leader: Welcome to Country ceremonies are “overdone”

🚨 Thrilled to share my latest publication with Jay Daniel Thompson

I’m really excited to see this (finally) published. We hope it adds another voice to critical conversations surrounding the problematic relationship between news media and the far right

Another day, another far-right influencer complaining about the polarized dating market

I wrote about this with the emergence of the right-wing dating app, The Right Stuff

Since its trending over on the bad site, if anyone wants to read my new article on the far-right’s use of X/Twitter Spaces, it’s open access:

🚨 Happy to share my latest open-access research which examines the use of Twitter’s live-audio conversational feature, Spaces, with far-right communities

I argue that the Elon Musk backed Spaces has emerged as a powerful communicative tool for the far-right

🚨 Very thrilled to see my latest article out in the world (open access)

It looks at the far-right dating app, The Right Stuff which boasts “profiles without pronouns” and was co-founded by Trump administration AND Project 2025 alumni

Starting off the paper with a bang

Academia has been a bit of a slow grind lately, so I was really pleased to get some unexpected good news today:

- My paper on right-wing dating apps was accepted for publication in Discourse, Context & Media

- Our ARC Discovery Project was shortlisted

Honestly, thank fuck 🥺

What a disgusting and chilling attack on academic freedom by the Australian Research Council

Dr Abdel-Fattah is completely undeserving of this appalling political interference

As a Macquarie academic, I hope my university fights this tooth and nail
February 27, 2025 at 7:26 AM
I’ll take it
February 5, 2025 at 5:28 AM
Late to this, but sending solidarity to my Macquarie colleague Dr Randa Abdel-Fattah. An extraordinary attack on the academic freedom of one of this continent’s leading anti-racist scholars
