It is spring, moonless night in the small town, starless and bible-black.

things I did not know or had perhaps forgotten: Ernie Banks served on the board of the Chicago Transit Authority during the last years of his Cubs career. He's shown here in the CTA's 1971 annual report.

the first/undated clip here is marvelous AM-hazy late-night spacey jazz; shame it's not longer. Haven't checked out the 4/18/73 clip yet but am guessing (hoping!) it's more of the same.

phrases appearing in the SABR Games Project draft story I am currently working on:
- "David and Goliath went to extras"
- "the damn weather's against us"
- "locally beloved burger business"
- "severe case of poison ivy on both ankles"

It's epic, lemme tell ya.

A six-minute "Roll Over Beethoven"? yeah, no.

(Ackshually, it's worth a moment's listen to hear how the song loses about 10 mph when the drummer comes in. As a "guitarist" it is my instinct to feel the drummer's too slow; a drummer might think the guitar intro is too fast.)

what skill did you master that you will never ever use again?

Pressing Silly Putty firmly and evenly onto the comics page of a newspaper to get a clean print of one frame.

An essential component of childhood. Of course, we'll probably find out someday that Nerf crumbs are toxic, and schoolyards and front yards all over America were poisoned forever in the '70s and '80s. But it was great fun at the time.
25 Days of Christmas - Day #7

If there was a NERF Football under your tree Christmas morning, it didn’t stay there long. Even if it was too cold to go outside, you could always play inside, much to Mom’s dismay.

”Run to the recliner and cut left, Timmy!”

some significant part of this is just catch-all fear for “this is not the child I ordered” I think
Oh, here's a big surprise. The transphobes don't believe in ADHD either.
then, the transphobes , feeling victorious at how many people they have made unhappy and despairing in the previous week, move on to anything else that has a spectrum and the possibility of more colours than they can conceive - such hateful people - they cannot understand anything that is not THEM

just misread the “movie you’ve watched more than six times with a gif” meme as “movie you’ve watched more than six times with a girl” and trying to figure out if any qualify.

Weekend cooking music: been some ‘75 Faces discourse on my feed lately so let’s check ‘em out.
(Lots of food prep to do so I have a second, sorta Faces-adjacent thing to put on if this runs out.)

Emerson, Lake & Palmer’s ambitious album – Brain Salad Surgery – was released today in 1973. It’s full-on ELP – with plenty of bombastic virtuosity. It’s difficult to imagine anyone other than Keith Emerson, Greg Lake & Carl Palmer throwing themselves into something akin to “Karn Evil 9”

Pro baseball umpiring didn't agree with this poor gent: he started work June 10, 1963, and was released on June 26.
(News clips indicate he got into a flap on June 25: while working the plate, he got the ball-and-strike count wrong on his indicator.)

Green chile chicken soup tonight, from a recipe by @newmexiconomad.com. I don’t do loads of dairy-based soups but this one’s a keeper - comforting and modestly spicy.
