My op-ed in the Seattle Times on pedestrian safety. I stay safe every day by anticipating the dangerous but predictable actions of drivers, and I shouldn't have to: www.seattletimes.com/opinion/pede...
If I paid attention like Seattle drivers, I'd be dead | Op-Ed
I am alive today because when I am walking or biking around Seattle, I anticipate the actions of drivers — many of whom aren't paying attention to me.

Microsoft, Amazon, and other big corporations spent a lot of $$ to defeat progressive Dems in WA legislative special elections this year. They lost *every single one* of those races. That should be a loud and clear signal to Democratic leaders in the legislature about what the electorate wants.

Making Boren pedestrian and bike friendly is my white whale. Making Rainier and MLK safe is more important, but the people deserve pleasant direct routes between populous neighborhoods

Cascade PBS has republished an op-ed from former Seattle PD monitor Antonio Oftelie. They took it down in 2023 after learning it had been partially ghostwritten by the Seattle PD.

For some reason, its been republished with no explanation.

Seattle, be wary of defunding police without building bridges
Lasting change in policing and public safety will not flow from feel-good funding shifts. Social services must be transformed, too.

Mayor-elect Katie Wilson just announced her transition team, with 61 members overseeing different policy areas. Transition teams are largely an expression of values and policy focus, although I expect some of these folks will end up in the administration. publicola.com/wp-content/u...

We will do a 2,500 page environmental review on a new highway that we know will lead to more traffic, and then rule out a bus lane with analysis that is done on the back of a napkin.
Idk what stage this is at, but it was eye opening when we prodded about the Route 8 study (which SDOT took as fact) but it just counted cars in 2 lanes then multiplied delay by two for adding a bus lane. No factoring in of mode shift, alternate routes, etc. I'd imagine that's what WSDOT is doing too

Also NONE of this will work (or is working) for transit riders traveling north bound on Rainier without dedicated bus-only lanes south of Massachusetts. In these designs, and in the current situation, the bus gets stuck behind cars queuing in the right lane to get on I-90.

Why are we assuming that we want to maintain car volumes? To meet our climate, public health and road safety goals as a city, there is no reason any on or off ramp in #Seattle should require multiple lanes. #Rainier

In a fairly telling moment, the ST team tried to get Kirk to answer that, and then gave kind of a non-answer.

Noteworthy, because in 2009 this was specifically not the process, with an independent body created to produce a list of names - because it's a bit unusual for an Executive to create a list of candidates to fill their own vacant council seat.
King County Executive-elect Zahilay says he intends to submit 3 nominees for his open council seat that will act as caretakers and not run for the seat next year. He says the appointment should take place by 12/9.

(He's being sworn in as Executive tomorrow.)
