It is my quite strong view that the PM should be meeting with the Coastal First Nations himself.

And the Premier of BC himself.

Not sending his Energy Minister on both errands.

Statecraft is about a lot more than int’l trips.

What message does it send that his only meeting is with Smith.

Yup, Carney really got that national unity thing by capitulating to Smith and O&G.

As a political scientist, I think the effects on unity are some of the biggest problems with the agreement. It legitimates "Alberta" as an aggrieved party, distinct from other provinces, while treating BC and its peoples to be as issues to be managed, rather than partners in the federation.

Seems shockingly naive to think Carney is not simply being a pal to oil and gas interests. He's been dismantling climate policy since the moment he became leader.

Also, this doesn't sound like this is the clever win Max et al claim. The UCP got exactly what they wanted.

MacKinnon simply reaffirming what Hodgson said… the Liberals view the environment beholden to the economy and viewing it the other way around is an old way of thinking. #Canada #CdnPoli
DeBellefeuille says she is shocked by Hodgson saying that caring about the environment is just being nostalgic.
MacKinnon says he was referring to the fact that the economic situation has changed. #QP

Canada’s top political leaders are climate deniers. There’s no such thing as “decarbonized” oil and no environmentally conscious way to increase fossil fuel production.

Mark Carney and his government are sacrificing the climate and baking in worse natural disasters in the hope of short-term profit.
People who care about climate change are “dreaming nostalgically about the past.” - Minister Hodgson

Gotcha. That explains a lot.

I got this same text this morning.

“Alberta” doesn’t issue tickets, your municipality will. By mail if it in person.

I mean the AB govt sucks ass, but texting a speeding ticket is not very convincing.

We can do anything we put our minds to.
Political leadership has never been more important, but that depends on the active engagement of the electorate, and organized pressure for actionable solutions.

It‘s not great that the best gloss on Carney’s pipeline deal is that he’s either pulling a fast one on the premier of Alberta or on the people of Canada.

Democracies can’t function if citizens have to resort to guessing what their leaders are actually doing.

If Danielle Smith recalls her very own recall legislation there should be a province wide general strike the very next day. No more screwing around this government will have to be taken down immediately.

Andrew Scheer, the old calendar that is right once every 8 years or so. #Canada #CdnPoli
In QP today, Andrew Scheer denounced carbon capture as "burying air," which is wild considering how they went to bat for Pathways against greenwashing rules.
Aside from the very, very big policy questions raised by the MOU, one curious subplot that intrigues me is that the Alberta premier and the federal Conservative leader are talking very differently about this agreement.

I'm not sure how that plays out.

Carney jamming another pipeline through our beautiful province isn't just bad energy policy - it's bad health policy. Climate health is population health.

More fossil fuels mean more PM2.5, more heart disease, more lung disease, even dementia. Not to mention the excess deaths from extreme heat

Yeah, that’s exactly what I’m calling “very concerning” in my earlier post. If that truly is the end result, it would be devastating. It would also work against supposedly joint goal of the feds and the province to build out carbon capture, as you need a strong enough market incentive to justify it.
