Help support independent bookstores and the freedom to read.
Bookshop life is a kind of paradise. Hard work, but pure and good. Independent, cash- poor, soul-rich. I'm so lucky, everyday, to work in it. Yes that's a mummy case stood up in the background. 😁

I like it! Thinking I need to add a "Banned" category for my listings
Question: I have looked for a list of historically banned books. What I find are 'top ten' type lists with famous BB like "Ulysses" or lists of current BB. Looking for something comprehensive and extensive. Any ideas?
I think you are right and your idea is awesome.

So - I made this bluesky feed "Read Banned Books"

"The story begins with Benjamin Franklin’s first bookstore in Philadelphia and takes us to a range of booksellers ... 'The Bookshop' is also a history of the leading figures in American bookselling, often impassioned eccentrics, and a history of how books have been marketed and sold"

In the past few days I've made similar posts about how reading affects the reader, beyond the story.📖

You are welcome here if you say the right words, think the right thoughts, and have the right values.
This country was founded and populated by people fleeing that sort of government thought policing.
In an op-ed in the Kansas City Star, Amanda Wells and @refugees.org's Alexia Gardner explain how new policy to vet immigrant's social media accounts for "anti-American" content will undercut free expression and chill the speech of immigrant writers and artists. www.kansascity.com/opinion/read...

Reading books tends to involve two cognitive processes that could create a survival advantage. First, it promotes cognitive engagement as the reader connects to the material.
Second, books promote empathy, social perception, and emotional intelligence, processes promoting greater survival.

"When you read an engaging book, your brain doesn’t just process words; it simulates the experiences they evoke ... That’s why reading about a chase scene can make your heart race, or why a well-written love story can feel physically warm." 📖

The freedom to read includes the freedom to choose which medium(s) you prefer. I read physical books - that's my personal choice, my wife uses a Kindle. I read books, magazines, and the fine print on cereal boxes.
Some people are just unhappy trolls trying to drag anyone else down. Be you.

You don't have to be a writer to enjoy these teasing tidbits, these tiny tales.
All you need is a little imagination. You remember imagination, don't you? Or did you burn it on the way to adulthood?

Book Review: "Enshittification: Why Everything Suddenly Got Worse and What to Do About It" by Cory Doctorow

Part book review, part social commentary. As a bookseller and retired software engineer, this seemed a cogent combination to me.
A lengthy but worthwhile read

How Much Worse Could the Internet Get?
Cory Doctorow’s “Enshittification” is premised on the idea that we created a technological marvel and then corporate greed ruined it. But what if that is not the case?

We're headed into the holiday season, so two things to know:

- The only items in the store that are more expensive due to tariffs are: two leather bookmarks. The other 2,100 gift items and 47,000 books haven't gone up. thehauntedbookshop.com

- A trip to a local bookshop is a present in itself 📚❤️

A Sample of Lost Sixties Fiction
(courtesy of Neglected Books)📖

"... a fair number of books that have since been [swept] under the rug and forgotten, and I wanted to take a few minutes to mention some of these, in hopes that one or more will catch the interest of a by-passer and be rediscovered."
On this date in 2014, I gleaned eight lost novels from R. V. Cassill's reviews for the New York Times and Book World between 1961 and 1974.
