Girls will say, “I needed this,” and it’s just eating oysters while looking at the body of water they came from.

Taking an overnight trip up the coast, and I know I am looking forward to some outdoor time much more than my spouse is. 😂

Around the corner from my father-in-law is a 12-foot skeleton in someone’s front yard wearing a pilgrim hat and holding a sign that says, “No one is illegal on stolen land.” I love the Bay Area so much.

Everything sucks but also everything is wonderful. The dichotomy of being alive.

We took my father-in-law out for Thanksgiving dinner to a restaurant (along with everyone else with aging family members), and as we’re getting in the car, he says, “Amazing the amount of cripples in this place.” 🤦‍♀️

Yes, HID headlights are very bright but the bigger problem is the proliferation of gargantuan vehicles with 5’+ hood heights so that if you’re driving a normal sized car their headlights are at your eye level rather than seat level like they’re supposed to be.

I’ve never thought more intensely about Thanksgiving since I came to a church that has a Thanksgiving Day service, and I’ve had to preach it. The blend of “giving thanks is good” & “the National myth/colonialism/genocide part is bad” is a tough needle to thread.

I have finished the new-ish Jen Hatmaker memoir, and I would not recommend it, and/or it just was not for me.

A fun thing about Thanksgiving week when Advent starts the following Sunday is scrambling to get everything ready during a short week. (This isn’t fun.)

I am an asshole when it comes to Italian pronunciation. Blame the vocal performance degree.
do you say “bruschetta” like a normal person or are you an asshole?

The only correct pie take is that pies are like dogs—they’re all good, we just have stronger personal attachments to some than others.

I love when this site is just debates about food opinions and what time you eat Thanksgiving dinner. Such delightfully low-stakes conversations, given everything else happening in the world.

I wish so deeply that there were a way to get people to stop asking “Are you going home for Thanksgiving / Christmas?”

I am a middle aged adult. The home that I have is the one live in, and calling anything aside from that “home” makes a whole lot of presumptions.

For all y'all getting in the Advent spirit, my parish's choir just released an album of carols, featuring some interstitial music composed by our extremely talented music director. Check it out! ⚓ open.spotify.com/album/4QmDSq...

We’re extremely fortunate that my in-laws have generous financial means for their physical care, and even still, the work my spouse and his sister do to manage finances, appointments, etc. is so much. I’m glad we’re all geographically close.

We went to a small drag cabaret last night with some friends, and one of the performers tried to croon Natasha Bedingfield’s “Unwritten.” But at the chorus, everyone just scream-sang “FEEL THE RAIN ON YOUR SKIN!” It was amazing.

My spicy Thanksgiving food take is that a lot of the reason Thanksgiving dinner can be unsatisfying is because there are too many dishes and nothing gets served at the correct temperature so you end up with too much room-temperature glop.

My first husband and I would take the week and travel since we would often both work Christmas. Now I’m in a church that has a Thanksgiving Day service (😭), but my husband and I are still doing an overnight away before Advent gets going.
Actually in the spirit of this conversation, what’s a decision you made about a past Thanksgiving holiday that really paid off? I think people often feel trapped by their lives. Sharing our experiences can liberate us from that sense of claustrophobia.
On the most recent episode of VIBE CHECK, we answer listener questions about Thanksgiving, most importantly “do you go celebrate with the family members you don’t even like?”
