Seattle-based scientist studying the molecular biology of hemostasis, also I take photos and run marathons. Not vengeful but can hold a grudge.
All opinions are my own, etc.

I am so ready for Me Too, Chapter Two
When a cancelled performer reënters the culture, we expect them to offer us a great work, channelling their newfound clarity into the finest art they’ve ever made. With his new comedy show and début novel, has Louis C.K. met the bar?

Louis C.K.’s Next Chapter
In a new standup special, and a début novel, the comedian navigates murky, post-#MeToo terrain: not quite exiled, not quite welcomed back.

Extortion worked. Northwestern had not been able to draw down money on grants since April. Hemorrhaging money.

But the likely long-term consequences for NU and other schools is clear.

Generative AI deliberately removes this, entirely, from learning.

Just a friendly reminder as we go into the holidays:

Folks don't have to explain to you why they don't drink.

If you offer them a drink and they decline, don't ask them why. It's not your business.

Just offer them something without alcohol to drink instead. And move on.

Great thread and an excellent case for why we need federally-funded basic science research, and shouldn’t rely on pharma to drive innovation

Through the 90s and into the 00s all the major drug companies closed their natural product discovery teams down. I don't anticipate they'll race to start this up again. But keep your eye open for more of this coming from academia and small startups. (Fin)

I was reading a book the other day and the author threw in a passing mention to a bridge in Cork, Ireland which I’m pretty sure was a gift to me personally because what do you mean the locals have called it The Shakey Bridge for so long that recent conservation works were forced to retain the wobble

But we've still got Mavis Staples (and Bandcamp). That sweet soul music. Thank you, Jesus. mavisstaples.bandcamp.com/album/sad-an...

We need to tell our non-scientist people that the CDC is no longer a trusted source of information.

I follow mostly scientists here and we’re all right on top of what’s going on at federal agencies but I wouldn’t take it for granted that lay people have the same awareness.

One of the most liberating truths I’ve learned, and the one that white folx, particularly white men, still struggle to face, is this:

The myth of white supremacy explains your behavior.
It does not, and has never, determined my value.

In a lot of cases, clinical trials might be the only way for a child to survive a fatal childhood disease, or keep someone from dying from a form of cancer that doesn’t have any other options, etc. We tend to think of “trials” as novel experiments, but they’re often much more than that.
