Before the midterms of 1866, President Andrew Johnson called his congressional opponents traitors and said they should be hanged.

Voters were so profoundly moved by his words... that they gave his opponents a supermajority in Congress, and the nation got the Fourteenth Amendment.

Two thoughts about Frankenstein this week:

1. I really hope @realgdt.bsky.social visited the Frankenstein Pub while filming in Edinburgh
2. I also hope he went to Oxford to see a couple of Mary Shelley’s original draft pages in the Treasures exhibit at the Bodleian Library

you could fact check this — there aren’t 30 million illegal immigrants and there is no evidence that the presence of an immigrant in say houston has any impact on housing in madison, wisconsin — or you could note straightforwardly that this is just nazi rhetoric
JD Vance: "A lot of young people are saying housing is way too expensive. Why is that? Because we flooded the country with 30 million illegal immigrants who were taking houses that ought by right go to American citizens."

Star Wars has been revealing every character you thought died actually somehow survived ever since Disney bought Lucasfilm, but this is the one they drew a line on…
it is funny how much studio executives dislike making money
whelp, I’ll be thinking about the Steven Soderbergh movie about Ben Solo until the day I die, I guess. we could’ve had it all.

what a fucking thing, man

that 25 year old did more for the country in a week than most of the NYT op-ed section in a lifetime

A stable, functioning democracy is often unassuming, boring even. Easy to take for granted.

But this - millions coming together in a shared public space to insist on their rights as democratic citizens - is a mighty reminder that a proper democracy is something quite incredible and inspiring.
Sorry to be corny but the aerial shots of these crowds are almost indescribably moving and hopeful

notice the general mood of the timeline? how everyone is in a good mood and there’s a lot less misery and dooming? how there’s a lot of “we’re going to beat these assholes”?

anyway that’s why these events are important

I mean yes this is funny, but the fact that these unconstitutional stormtroopers are so directionless that they literally stand around waiting for random nonwhite delivery guys to bike past them is just pathetic. No mandate, no mission, no clue. Just racism.
ICE attempted
and failed to disappear a food delivery guy.
It needed to be scored.

There is no argument against birthright citizenship other than “I am incredibly racist and don’t like it”

It is clearly and simply spelled out in the 14th amendment - if you are born here, you are an American citizen.

to put an even finer point on it: the percentage of U.S. adults who say they “strongly disapprove” of Trump‘s job as president (about 46-50% of adults) is significantly higher than the percent of adults who voted for him (about 32% of adults)
genuinely believe that a large number of political, economic and media elites do not realize that nearly half the voting public did not vote for trump
currently at record-high search interest for canceling disney plus. pulling kimmel is a bigger deal to the company's bottom line than any of the "woke" scandals of the past 5 years. i think news & entertainment corp execs need put more work into understanding their audience, & get off twitter

it’s real easy to doom and gloom on this site but this simply isn’t going to work. 360 million people aren’t going to just shrug and say “okay I guess I don’t have bread OR circuses, will die in corner i guess”

Trump keeps telling legacy media he wants to be a fascist dictator and they keep responding: "Ha, yeah, but seriously, all jokes aside, what are your intentions?"
EARHARDT: We have radicals on the right as well. How do we fix this country?

TRUMP: I'll tell you something that's gonna get me in trouble but I couldn't care less. The radicals on the right oftentimes are radical because they don't want to see crime. The radicals on the left are the problem.
