Nao blinked down at his half-eaten breakfast. “I… see.” He did not, in fact, see. Tōya shifted in his seat, looking as uncomfortable as Nao felt having this conversation. He began to mumble a string of semi-coherent words, “So, you know… sometimes… with a friend… you might relieve tension… in this way…” “Oh,” said Nao. “I didn’t know.”  Well, actually, it wasn’t like that kind of thing was unheard of. He had caught wind of stories and rumours and the likes of soldiers or casters or even nobility doing that sort of thing with their colleagues to, as Tōya had put it, ‘relieve tension’. Though Nao had never been in such a position where he had to resort to ‘relieving tension’ with a companion. Tōya met Nao’s eyes for the first time that morning and asked with a small frown, “Is it weird?” “Uh.” Nao was not the right person to ask that question, given he was… celibate. “I don’t think so?” This answer, however, satisfied Tōya, and he sat back in his seat with a sigh. “Good.” “Speaking of which…” Nao glanced at the empty space beside Tōya. “Is Aito alright?” “Ah. Yeah. He said he’ll pass on breakfast. He’s a bit hungover.” “Oh.” So, he’s not… absent… for another reason? “I’ll go find some medicine for him before we leave, then.”

“I don’t know. Twenty? Nineteen?” Itsuki tilted his head, eyebrows furrowing. He laughed. “Right.” “Am I wrong?” “Uh…”  Nao could hardly remember the details of his first life, let alone how old he was when he died. It was at least older than twenty, but certainly not as old as Itsuki was now. The memories were hazy and distant, as if they no longer belonged to him, but were stories he’d heard from others. Maybe they were. Maybe they weren’t.  He looked down at his hands in his lap. “To be honest, I don’t really remember how old I am.” “Oh.” Itsuki’s expression shuttered.  “It’s fine, though,” Nao said quickly. “I’m older than twenty, at least.” His lips curled up at his own in-joke.

Both Tōya and Aito followed his gaze to the wall. Tōya clicked his tongue. “Nice sword.” “It’s my wife’s,” Yasuko’s voice came from behind. They turned to see her carrying in a tray of cups and a teapot. Once she set down the tea set and tray on the table, she gestured to another woman who’d been tailing her with a tray of sweets in hand. “My wife.” The woman looked around the same age, but she was tall and lean, with long, dark hair pulled back into a ponytail. Her beautiful face was cut by a large faded scar that stretched from her left eyebrow down to her jawline on the opposite side. She didn’t smile as she bowed to them and said, “Takamatsu Reiha. I’m now retired, but you may call me Takaha.” As Tōya opened his mouth to say something, Aito lifted his hand and smacked him hard on the back of the head. “Ow! What was that for?” Aito just levelled a glare at him. Nao cleared his throat and shot an apologetic smile in the direction of the women as they served the hot tea and sweets. Yasuko took a seat at the head of the table, while Takaha took the empty spot beside Nao.

Nao answered with the twitch of one eyebrow.  Hazuki flushed even darker. “I swear over my dead body! I wouldn’t slack off night duty to play around with girls, that’s way too risky. The truth is I lost something! I lost something and I got distracted trying to find it, okay?” “Hm.” Nao was doubtful, but he played along, asking, “What did you lose that was so important to risk the wrath of Master Saori?” “Um.” Hazuki bit his lip, then shuffled away from the table with great effort and suffering. He used one swollen hand to gesture to his obi. “I lost my, um, obijime.” The obijime was a part of Shin'gan Gakuen’s uniform in that it indicated the study pathway of a disciple. All casters were required to wear a blue obijime, whereas the ordinary disciples wore a white one. They were supposed to be fastened in a special knot around the obi at the waist—that way, they couldn't become loose during the day.

Thankfully, there were no issues for the rest of their journey. The rain eased off a considerable amount after the third day, and most of the places they were concerned could be flooded were fine, albeit a little wet. They reached the final waypoint before their destination in the late afternoon of the seventh day. The waypoint was the town of Hidaka a little ways from the coast. Farmland flanked the town’s borders, and the Tsukinote Range—which ran all the way from north to south along the west side of Seibō—provided a picturesque backdrop, all lush greens peppered with overflowing waterfalls.  The village they were heading to the next day likely had limited options in terms of overnight stays, so they opted to stop over in Hidaka to make their lives a little easier. With the more amiable weather came other travellers, and so they were only able to scrounge up two rooms to stay in that night.  Aito and Tōya were insistent Nao have some privacy, so he obliged if only to please them, although not without a bit of concern over letting the pair share a room with no one to mediate. Then again, they had apparently been ‘friends’ since childhood, so he figured that one of them would have died already if either were so inclined.

Nao waved a hand. “That’s fine. I expected much worse, honestly.” Much, much worse. It was as if a weight had been lifted off his shoulders. But he still had concerns, namely—“What about Hazuki? He doesn’t deserve expulsion, I’d hope.” “Unfortunately, he’ll be staying,” said Senior Morita, sending the still-sleeping boy in question a glare. “He’ll be dealt fifty lashes and suspended from classes for two weeks, in which he’ll spend secluded in his room writing out drills for Master Saori.” Unfortunately, he said, but he still had the heart to let Hazuki sleep on his lap. Nao held back his laugh. “What about his obijime?” “Well, he’ll still have to pay for a new one if he doesn’t find the one he lost.” “That’s…” Nao frowned, but there was little he could do about the issue. It wasn’t like he had any money.  Senior Morita raised an eyebrow, lips quirking up into a wry smile. “You can take him with you if you want.” “Absolutely not,” said Nao firmly. He knew it was a joke, but the thought still made him uncomfortable. “I don’t want to be responsible for him.”
