People in Puerto Rico and in the diaspora coordinated a long civil disobedience campaign that forced the U.S. to close Navy operations in Vieques. @cpipr reports on how renewed U.S. military activity in Puerto Rico is stirring up trauma among Viequenses and other Puerto Ricans, and on the colonial attitudes towards the bodies of Puerto Rican women - e.g. US military men inquring about sex work. But if those 10 million people march, make their grievances known and Trump ignores them all the same, what was actually accomplished? Nothing. You've proven that you can mobilize masses to express discontent. Great. The ruling class already knows people are discontent. They don't care. The last 'No Kings' protest ended in inconsequence because there was no material leverage. No economic disruption. No cost for ignoring the workers; just symbolic expression that changes and challenges nothing. When we critique "nonviolent" liberal protest, we're not necessarily saying grab guns or whatever. We're saying: your protest needs consequences. If they ignore you, what happens? There has to be a cost. But consider this: those same 10 million people organizing mutual aid, community defence and withholding their labor would cripple the economy in hours. That's the power of organized labor; that's showing the bourgeoisie how fragile their position actually is - by threatening material consequences where it *actually* hurts: profit. Want to truly make your demands heard and met? Don't march. Strike. Let them try to run the country without workers' consent.
