Here are our sweet little duck whānau noodling around on the pond this morning. They're so beautiful! And getting so good at diving now. Darling little things.
I was recounting the shag drama to another walker today who was absolutely outraged 😂😂

I needed more neutrals in the stash, to be fair, I've got so much that's just wildly bright or patterned haha. This white is a permacrease shirting! Very clever. And I'm beyond obsessed with the taupey coloured typewriter which is almost waxed canvas finish. Will make an epic spring outerwear.

#garmentsewing ...
I was doing so well at using up my stash that I gave myself permission to add more stash 😂😂😂😂 if I'm smart I'll get these into the making rotation straight away so they can't languish.

And here are some pics.
Alt text for all: pūtangitangi (Paradise shelducks) x8 in a rose garden. 6 are just about fledglings, mostly charcoal grey with white wing tips and chestnut butt feathers coming in. They're stretching and noodling. Dad is a nearly all black duck. Mum is chestnut w/white head.

Pūtangitangi family update! I'm pretty sure a couple show off their wings in this video and they're getting really large! I can absolutely see these little dudes flying away soon. #nzbirds
They're really loving the rose garden at the moment. Unconfirmed as yet but they're maybe 5 girls/ 1 boy. (!!!)
December 7, 2025 at 9:51 PM
Update, another close look this morning and I reckon we're dealing with FIVE GIRLS and just the one boy 😂
Pretty sure these are the two piles from this morning rather than the same three ducks twice 🤞🏻

Already got these grass stained when I laid down under a willow tree. Worth it though because look at these little cuties that immediately popped up!! #nzbirds

Made myself some #sewhouse7freerangeslacks and I'm quite pleased with how they came out. Really comfortable and great for those of us long in the rise 👀🙏🏻 Love the serious deep pockets and the waist facing situation is nice. #garmentsewing

I parked myself in the grass this morning and these four pūtangitangi babies came right up to me. I appreciated the opportunity to get a good look at their incoming feathers. This one loafing in the grass at the start, plus the one closest to it, I think are females with their reddish necks #nzbirds

Our little pūtangitangi mates were sleeping on the cycle path when we arrived this morning 😂 soon afterwards, they started climbing the steps which was just very cute.
Shortly after this they had a run in with the Canada geese after Daddy pūtangitangi provoked them #nzbirds

Yesterday we went to the gardens later than usual and found our little pūtangitangi mates dabbling about in the front pond. They've got quite a range going now!
By my calculations they're 49-50 days old. They should fledge at 55-60 days old 👀 #nzbirds

This morning, I thought the ducklings might have fledged because we couldn't find them in their usual spot. But no, they just traded up to the rose garden!! 🌱🇳🇿 #nzbirds

Toni received a brand new box today today and she's so excited 😅🇳🇿🐱

And the other newly completed #garmentsewing project; I'm excited to wear this all summer too. It was meant to be a toile but I adore it, #fibremoodcarline top. Might save my official length for something else. This cold shoulder yoke/ sleeve placket situation is cleverly put together.

On the home stretch of a very large bit of work so my break is to actually photograph some of the #garmentsewing I've been doing.
These shorts are a ripoff of RTW from a genocide loving Aussie brand. I'm obsessed. Base pattern #greenstylecargo with 9cm of pleat each side added.

I nearly didn't recognise the pūtangitangi family this morning because they're just so Big! Plus they were in a different spot. I think one or two still look vaguely striped if you squint. Love the old toddle-toddle-plop #nzbirds

I fear my apricot is about to look like the broom and kānuka down at the Nuggets (if you look closely, the apricots themselves are doing a miraculous job of hanging on).

Our little darling pūtangitangi ducklings were parked up very sedately this morning 😇🐤 #nzbirds
November 27, 2025 at 12:42 AM
And here are the pūtangitangi! This morning they were drifting in and out of cuddle puddle mode, between grazing. They absolutely love harassing each other but also cuddling #nzbirds
I bet that spot of ground they all lay in gets so warm 😂😂
November 26, 2025 at 8:37 AM
Duckposting. First, the non pūtangitangi ducks of the park. There are several little clans. This first enthusiastic little chap by the carpark was so cute with mum lolloping along behind 😂 #nzbirds
There's a sweet grey teal duckling too.

One of the gardens staff motored over to Eddie and I after seeing me take this foxglove pic and was like "Have you seen the really unique aquilegia??" and pointed at it and I went, "ooh yes fasciated! There's another with it in the Wonderland garden" and then we just nerded out about plants a bit 🌱🇳🇿
November 25, 2025 at 8:19 PM
Yes last few days! I reckon they're maybe 40ish days old today. They have quite a decent little chestnut patch on their tail feathers now too. Some still with reasonably white faces but the ones I assume hatched first are just about fully black now.
November 25, 2025 at 8:11 PM
Eddie has kindly edited my duckposting video down to a single minute so you can watch the little darlings waking up! We caught them just in time this morning, snuggled in one of the rhododendron beds. Dad's method of getting them out of bed is um. Not subtle. #nzbirds
