I give them an honest answer: the relationship wasn't working & it felt one-sided. The only time I've left it at "I'm done" was a situation where the other person was trying to provoke a confrontation & I didn't bite - just blocked. Toxic situation.

I sometimes find that my effort in relationships is one-directional & while I don't expect myself from other people, I do expect shared effort. If I find I've been carrying the relationship alone, sometimes I'll just set it down & walk away. The policy isn't one size fits all, of course.

I generally weigh the value of the relationship to determine how I dis/engage. I have ghosted with no explanation because I didn't hold enough value in the connection to do the emotional labor required of the closure process.
