“Flowers” departs from the punk cliches in several ways but also has strong continuities. Robert Smith admitted instrumental inspiration from PsyFurs’ debut but this song’s lyrics bend also toward Pornography.

“We Love You” on the same Furs album is simply a punk song. Perhaps retro by 1980, but maybe instead we don’t have to envision punk as ending so early as that story has been told.

So much of this is kayfabe. Exactly as you say; we must remain open to this being a collision of accidents, scams, and opportunistic moves. “Planning” is often arrogant posturing more than accurate description.

Frost probably counts as incorporating Techno innovations but as we move into more recent music the dominance of electronic dance music becomes too pervasive to get precious about.
