Jeffries: "It even appears that the Trump administration was ready to put forth a plan that would at least have been worthy of consideration, and that Mike Johnson tanked it. So now Mike Johnson wants to act like he's the Speaker of the House?"

Schmitt’s argument is unintentionally revealing.

The “color revolutions” were non-violent, pro-democracy political movements aimed at ending autocratic regimes in former Soviet bloc nations.

If the Democrats are leading a “color revolution,” then Trump is an autocrat & Schmitt is pro-autocrat.
Sen. Eric Schmitt: "This is the language of a color revolution where you're calling on military men and women to disobey orders."

Trump is illegally blowing up boats in the Caribbean—supposedly to stop drugs coming into the US. Yet he pardons the former president of Honduras who was convicted of sending cocaine to the US. It doesn’t make any sense. Whatever Trump is doing in Venezuela, it’s not about drugs.

Bullshit.
FOX: You said the follow up strike was lawful. What law is it that allows no survivors?

LEAVITT: The strike was conducted in self defense to protect Americans

Killing shipwrecked survivors in the water is a quintessential war crime and one that resulted in the death penalty at Nuremberg. Hegseth is a murderer and war criminal as is every individual in the chain of command that this order traveled through. Punish every single one of them.
Pete Hegseth denies he gave the order to kill them all. But even some Republicans now appear to be demanding answers, so Frank Bradley, who oversaw the bombings, is in discussions with House Armed Services about coming in.

Rep Adam Smith lays out his Qs to me here:

"Finally, there’s the incredibly weak substantive case for the bombings. Tons of evidence has emerged casting doubt on whether those killed—who now number over 80—were even trafficking drugs to the United States."
News --> The commander who oversaw Pete Hegseth's alleged killing of two boat bombing survivors is now likely to come in and face questions from the House Armed Services Committee, ranking Dem Adam Smith tells me.

In this piece, I try to make sense of this horror:

Trump Boat Bombings Suddenly on Shakier Ground as Damning Info Emerges
Will Republicans give us a real investigation into Trump’s bombings, now that we just learned horrific new details about them? Or are they seriously going to fall on their swords for Pete Hegseth?

Intentionally killing civilians is a war crime by definition.
The drone strikes are cold-blooded murder, but what's happening is more than homicide. It's an international atrocity.

That's why genocide, indiscriminate bombing, ethnic cleansing, and civilian massacres are all prosecuted as war crimes. War crimes aren't only against combatants.
one of the problems I have with Democrats (and other critics) labeling these "war crimes" is that it accepts the underlying claim that the people being murdered are enemy combatants. They're not! it's just murder!

However you interpret the laws of armed conflict, and whether you identify the boat strikes as war crimes or as illegal orders that violate both US and international law and parse the difference between those, there is no way that calling them war crimes helps Trump.

They aren't denying that the second strike happened to kill two wounded survivors from a wrecked vessel.
Q: You said that second strike was in accordance with the law of armed conflict, but the Navy's own manual says that firing on survivors from a wrecked vessel is an example of a war crime

LEAVITT: I would reiterate that the strike was conducted in accordance with the law of armed conflict

"Killing the witnesses" is not a legal defense.
Fox News' Joey Jones justifies the US military killing survivors after an initial boat strike: "An enemy combatant does not have to have a gun to be a danger or a threat... if you leave anybody alive, they can signal and let others know what’s happening and they can also retaliate through radio."

Reporter: Governor Walz called for the release of your MRI results

Trump: They were perfect like my phone call where I got impeached.

Reporter: Can you tell us what they were looking at?

Trump: I have no idea. It was just an MRI. It wasn’t the brain because I took a cognitive test and aced it.

President Trump says he would not have wanted the second strike.

POTUS's only defense of Hegseth is claim that Hegseth supposedly said he didn't order it.
Reporter: If there were a second strike that killed wounded people, would that be legal?

Trump: I don’t know that happened and Pete said he did not even know what people were talking about. I wouldn’t have wanted a second strike. The first strike was very lethal. It was fine.

Hegseth and the Trump administration think this shows strength. It might impress their core base of loser fascists, but to everyone else it shows their institutional and moral rot.

When authoritarians use performative cruelty and boastfulness, it's a sign of insecure power. Overcompensation.
This is what the so-called "Secretary of War" is tweeting amid reports that his department ordered a second strike to make sure they killed survivors of a boat they attacked that they allege with no proof carries drugs (which doesn't justify bombing them even it were true)

Damn, Chuck Schumer grew a spine.

I imagine he feels motivated as opposition now that Trump threatened Congress Dems with execution for "sedition." It fits the historical pattern; elites rarely take concrete action (like shadow hearings) against authoritarians until they personally feel threatened.

They demonstrated pretty conclusively that they understand how to cover pardons as if they are huge scandals when they ran multiple days of banner headlines and scolding op-eds and follow ups when Biden pardoned Hunter exactly one year ago.

They just choose not to for trump because they like him
It’s wild how the press is ok with the president abusing the pardon power. That used to be one of the most scrutinized things about a presidency.
