USA: I'm a doctor studying devastating effects of long Covid. Now it's ruining my life too.

"Dr Cohen and up to 17 million Americans with the condition, every task—showering, chores, work, socializing—drains energy."

Repeat infections don’t make you stronger. They don’t give you immunity. They actually harm your brain, heart and immune system. They’re also NOT inevitable

Kids are harmed by COVID too. They need the adults to protect them. We need clean in schools and on school buses /6

COVID is a social justice issue. Masks, tests, air filters, paid time off… these things all cost money. The disease disproportionately impacts those who are most vulnerable and multiple marginalized

Today marks the five year anniversary of Covid being declared a pandemic. Some things I want people to remember:

The threat is not gone. People are still dying and becoming disabled every single day

COVID is airborne. It’s always been airborne.

If you’re still acting like the COVID pandemic is over as we note its five-year anniversary this week, then you’re part of the reason it’s still ongoing.

When you’re dealing with invisible chronic illness, you have to endure a ton of gaslighting. People don’t believe what they can’t see.

You learn to hide your pain. You learn to mask, deliver a convincing “I’m fine”.

The cruel twist is the better you are at hiding it, the less people believe you.

The only difference between a temp abled person & a disabled one is luck & time

Their good health isn’t due to “trying harder” or moral superiority. It’s luck

Health can be taken away at any moment, and if you live long enough you will almost certainly experience disability

Be kind. Be inclusive.

I have seen the most disgusting media propaganda in the last five years that has framed the narrative that disabled people are lazy. That they are a drain on our economy. That clinically vulnerable would have died anyway from COVID. It’s sickening.

When someone becomes disabled or chronically ill, people will twist themselves into knots finding a way to blame them. They need to find fault so they don’t have to face the randomness of life.

The truth is, anyone can become disabled at any time.

Good health is not a guarantee.

Covid isn’t over. Labour are ignoring WHO. Blaming the disabled for the now 3.1 million sick with long covid. They ignored the advice below from December and the advice from August ‘24 that could have prevented the quademic event at Christmas. The opposition remain silent. What does this achieve? 🧵
[10 Dec 2024] Opening Remarks from Dr Tedros at yesterday’s @who.int media briefing:

“We cannot talk about COVID in the past tense.

“It’s still with us, it still causes acute disease and Long COVID, and it still kills.

“The world might want to forget about COVID-19, but we cannot afford to.”

You can’t label a group of people expendable and not have it change you.

You can’t turn away in the face of evil and not pay a price.

Wear a mask. Protect one another. Resist.

Stand up for anyone & everyone who’s different than you. Fight for their rights.

Don’t wait until it happens to you.

For years, folks looked the other way as millions died or became disabled by Covid. They shouted “your health is not my responsibility” or “only the vulnerable” were at risk.

This callous disregard for human life has desensitized us. It helped pave the way for the current atrocities.

We know masks prevent Covid & other respiratory infections

We know hospital acquired covid has a 10% mortality rate

We know patients are scared or postponing medical care because they can’t risk Covid

We know many HCWs are burned out & suffering Long Covid

So why aren’t we masking in healthcare?
We Need Mandatory Masking in Healthcare, and We Need it Now
Healthcare facilities should set the tone when it comes to masking. They should help patients protect themselves from Covid and other threats. Instead they push droplet dogma and put lives at risk.
