I like taxes and housing.
Imagine thinking this is a bad thing. Non-expert opinion writing strikes again. Good on you, Steve Reed! This is a great change.

Ignore the bombast: Steve ‘build, baby, build’ Reed’s boast looks likely to end in targets more pathetic than they are now, says Guardian columnist Aditya Chakrabortty

council tax revaluation: fine, yes

shifting income tax even more to high earners: no! stop it! why does no one want a broad tax base any more

being less scared of the bond markets: look, they’re not imaginary, they’re a threat because our borrowing is very high!

Well - the reset lasted a long time!

They really do not know what they are doing. If Cooper isn't what you want at Home, then just sack her! Musical chairs is very bad!

I dont care about the political implications, Starmer needs to go. No clue, no idea.

I get the point of the hypocrisy but like - thats the point? Labour politicians aren't allowed to have tax scandals specifically because we believe in paying tax.

These aren't actually as contradictory as Bluesky thinks.

Viewed from the perspective of the constitutional order of states like Germany or Belgium, I've always found paranoia in UK politics over ID cards rather baffling.

UK liberals who oppose it viscerally have never been quite able to explain why other functioning democracies seem to cope with them
A majority of Labour party members - who are on any metric rather more socially liberal than the average voter - back ID cards. Plenty of polling showing they are popular with voters in general. Perhaps the zombie myth that British voters oppose them will die at last?

Happy for the Greens that they have accepted they aren't a serious party and have just embraced it.

Fun to see Truss once again presenting herself as a austere spending cutter who was foiled by her party who wouldn't countenance doing tough things. In reality, the author of a universal energy bailout bigger, blunter, longer and more generous than anyone thought sensible.

The problem with this, as I'm sure @lewisgoodall.com does know, is that inheritance tax isn't a tax on the very or ultra wealthy, its a tax on the middle and upper middle classes who do not have the ability to move assets into trust or overseas.

A serious conversation on IHT would need to (1)...
"Nerd". "Devil". "Communist". “Pathetic”. “Clown”. "Plank".

These are some of the names Lewis Goodall was called this week when he floated the idea of increasing inheritance tax.

Why are the right-wing so furious about this idea?

Lewis Goodall caused a social media storm this week when he suggested raising the rate of UK inheritance tax on LBC. Why did this make so many people angry?

I'm painfully reminded of the backbench Labour MP who, following the defeat of the welfare reforms, and asked about how they would find the additional funds, seemed genuinely confused as to why they couldn't just borrow the money.

No one can doubt the tax system is a hot mess — with wild distortions and cliff edges.

But the chancellor needs cash *now* and for the OBR to actually score it.

Totally unserious politics from Polanski (again...) - Trump is a threat to the international alliance which is why NATO is more important than ever.

Allied countries coming together in their collective self-defence and interests? That is anti-Trumpian by nature. Its why he has wanted to leave!

Please give me one example of a country raising such consistently high revenue with a wealth tax, Richard. Because you surely know it doesnt exist. Just raise VAT, for the love of god.
I've long campaigned for a Wealth Tax - and it’s great to see the call growing stronger by the day.

A 2% Wealth Tax on assets over £10 million could raise £24 BILLION per year.

And polls show that 75% of the public supports a wealth tax!

Together, we can win this!

Kind of remarkable that she has not changed her beliefs at all given the innumerable evidence she has as to their dangers/problems. Have to respect the consistency, if it wasn't so dangerous to young women to encourage them to follow these beliefs.
