There were several different species at the bog that day. These northern pintails are a species I hardly ever get to see and they were nice enough to stay fairly close to shore.
Northern pintail drake. Merlin says they're an, "Elegant, slender duck with long neck and tail. Males have a chocolate brown head with a white slash coming up the neck, white breast, and mostly gray body." Pair of pintail drakes on a pond with a rippled surface reflecting the evening light.

Northern shovelers "whirlpooling" at Celery Bog.

Whirlpooling is when ducks swim in a tight circle to stir up and concentrate suspended material in the water so they can sift it out for food. Sometimes there are lots of them all spinning around.

Log lean-to at Fort Boonesborough, KY. Very primitive. Woman who was demonstrating soap and candle making at Fort Boonesborough. We had a conversation about the origins of soap where she explained how it was probably discovered as stuff that was found at the bottom of fire pits where animals had been cooked and the drippings gathered in the ashes. Then people discovered it had weird and useful properties. I think that's how the story went, anyways. Sign explaining: "Boonesborough, 'Capital of the Colony of Transylvania,' was settled April, 1775, by Daniel Boone as the first fortified settlement in Kentucky. Near the fort under the "Divine Elm Tree" in May, 1775, Colonel Richard Henderson held the first legislative assembly of frontier settlers of Harrodsburg, St. Asaph, Boonesborough and Boiling Springs Settlements." That said, there seems to be tons of places with names that have "Boone" as part of them in the south east US: Boone, Ft. Boonesborough, Booneville, .... After a while it's like, "OK, we get it, DANIEL! Sheesh!" This fellow was trying to show people how to throw tomahawks.

This is what it looks like. I have a hard time picturing Dan'l and Mingo hanging out there. Anyways, one of the things they're famous for is something called "spoon bread." I stopped by to pick some up several years ago but, honestly, only remember not being wowed by it.
"Historic Boone Tavern" in Berea, KY. According to wiki, "Boone Tavern is a restaurant, hotel, and guesthouse affiliated with Berea College." Just read that "The building was built with bricks manufactured by students in the college's brickyard and was constructed by the college's Woodwork Department at a total cost of $20,000." Also, "The "Tavern" portion of the name derives from the historic definition that refers to a public inn for travelers rather than the modern definition related to the sale of alcoholic beverages." So, there ya go. Spoonbread. "Spoonbread is a soft, savory, and custardy Southern corn dish, similar to a baked soufflé, that is served with a spoon. It is made from a base of cornmeal, milk, and eggs, with the egg whites often beaten separately and folded in to create a light and fluffy texture. Spoonbread is a comforting side dish that pairs well with hearty meals and is traditionally served warm with butter." I got some on one of my visits to Berea and remember there was some reason why it wasn't supposed to he available just then but the folks at the restaurant got some for me anyways. So that was really nice of them.

Totally feeling hungover from this trip yesterday. Took all ten hours with no breaks except to refuel and restroom stops. Between the crappy weather and holiday traffic exasperated by highway construction and a couple of accidents, it took all of the allotted time. Arrived at 20:01. No fun.
