Even the household type composition seems like it would be somewhat confounded by the housing pressures itself in the long run tho—e.g., families deciding to have one kid instead of two because they can’t afford a big enough apartment for two kids

(“household size trending down” being my very quick and dirty proxy for broad quality *improvement*—expect it varies significantly by region etc tho)

Asked the same question and this was Matt’s response. Household size does seem to have trended down about a full person in the last 60 years based on FRED’s data, but couldn’t find a good data series for sq ft or # bedrooms immediately
