Gardener and reader interested in Oklahoma native plants and the bugs that live with them. I live in the northern Cross Timbers ecoregion, USDA zone 7B.
If I try it, I will probably just experiment using seeds I already have. I haven't even decided yet if I will buy seeds for winter sowing this year or just use the ones I have collected. (I always have much better luck with them.)

I hadn't thought about that, but I sometimes buy seeds from a place in Texas. I might see if they have any annuals that I could start later in spring.

Well technically the verbena is a tender perennial, but it grows fast, so I think it might work.

No, but since they're annuals I thought I might be able to make them by starting them late. My asters have finished blooming here, but I wonder if there are later-blooming aster varieties I could try also.

I will look into them. It looks like there are some native varieties around here.

This is a native annual from SW Texas named Huisache Daisy that might work in fall containers. I almost forgot it because it was an accidental stowaway in a packet of Perfumeballs, and it should germinate in warm soil temps. I saved the seeds without any plan for it at the time. #nativeplants

I try to carry my phone all the time, but I still miss a lot of pictures. It's been a good summer for butterflies.

I have the same problem. A few petunias and some aster seedlings that bloomed later than the rest. I've thought about starting some annuals in pots for next fall, so I can bring them in on freezing nights.

I planted frostweed this fall, mostly for the Monarchs but also for the frost flowers.

I just wait until December or January for containers. Probably December outdoors here, also. It's still warm in the daytime here now.

Yes, they migrate to Mexico every year.

It's cypress vines. They're not native and I usually pull most of them when they come up but this was a lazy year for me in the garden.

I'm pretty sure that once the tail broke he couldn't steer it at all.

Aka Blister beetle. Definitely don't touch that one. 😉

This summer had a lot of rain compared to normal years. I'm not sure what would have caused it.
