First-world countries are tripping over each other to have the harshest immigration policies when immigration is the only thing that will save them from a pretty harsh demographic reckoning in a few decades. A competition to see who will be the poorest, shittiest nation of angry pensioners

The Real Lesson From Zohran Mamdani’s Ascent
The decisive factor isn’t his ads or charisma. It is the public financing of election campaigns, and it should be replicated across the United States.

I may sound like a broken record on this but that's the nature of trauma: every one of these children will be traumatized for life. For life.

My own separation from my mother via immigration was just about the gentlest imaginable version... and it's still the central truth of my adult life. I'm 60.

Could we please stop with insisting that Congress is somehow the body that prosecutes criminal cases? Same for President? And that "Democrats in Congress" need to punish criminals -- or else? This is becoming a common plea, another way to dump on Democrats, but it's contrary to basic civics.
Everybody involved will need to go to prison and if democrats in congress don’t have the stomach for punishing these people they should just resign now.
DOGE was created for data theft and infrastructure dismantling and it wildly succeeded on both counts within the first few weeks of its existence. It will take a generation to rebuild what it destroyed and the breach of data is unprecedented.

why doesn't the Oregon GOP simply fight to repeal the gas tax altogether? Clearly, $0.06 more a gallon is too much for plowed roads and maintained bridges/traffic signals. maybe after 30 years of no road maintenance oregon will be a premier destination for gravel biking.

I agree. Every city need to figure out how to resist. We have 3 examples of how cities are responding, though:

LA: We will fight you.

Chicago: We will fight you.

Portland, OR: We will subject you to endless hours of improv theater and interpretive dance until you relent and leave us alone.

Seattle's Katie Wilson and Portland's Keith Wilson both come from transportation backgrounds; one in transit advocacy and one in sustainable freight.

Looking forward to the Wilson v. Wilson memes.

Today is a good day to remember, and to say, that the #MeToo movement was right, and was righteous, and has been vindicated over and over again. There was no overreach. There was no excess. There was no they-went-too-far.

So much work remains to be done.

Pretty much all affordability discourse could benefit from just posting this chart.

If you're in the better off America, all the luxury goods you want in excess are for the most part much cheaper. If you're in the poorer America, most of the shit you need to live/grow is more expensive.

I know others have already made this point, but there is absolutely an aspect of this related to the lack any real rail in this country. The effects on air travel should not play as big a factor as it clearly did in affecting healthcare for millions, let alone enabling a fascist government.
