*Actually this is not technically true because I get the Public Lending Right, which pays authors whose books are in public libraries; respect to libraries.

My first has novel earned out, and this year I got like $425! First book royalties I've ever seen outside of small advances. For money, I write for a trade publication. It's fun: I get to be an expert in a weird little corner of the world that sometimes bleeds out into the mainstream.

It's funny how the same multimillionaire guys who balk at the suggestion that they should pay the same for less will happily shrink your beer or squeeze another seat in the row for a few bucks.
