Just received the news that I'll be at the #IMC2026, where I'll be able to talk about the bit of my research that I probably like the most: How villagers tried to care for their animals - including stuff ranging from bizarre to cute and genuinely touching.

Below that is this text: Alpine Animal Welfare: Perception and treatment of animals in villages from Valais to Tyrol The lives of humans and animals in the Middle Ages were far more intertwined than today in general, but this was especially pronounced in the Alps: Villages depended on alpine pastoralism (the Alpwirtschaft) for their livelihood and due to a lack of suitable waterways alpine transportation relied on the work of pack and draught animals. This paper will investigate the relationship between humans and animals in the Alps in the Late Middle Ages, based on sources from rural alpine communities from Valais to Tyrol. The paper will show that alpine villagers had not only a profound awareness of the needs of their animals but were also willing to go to great lengths to ensure their well-being: The first part of the paper is about how villagers dealt with challenges to animal health stemming from diseases and the environment, including sophisticated and effective measures to curb the spread of infections. The second part is a showcase for how people in the Alps treated animals as beings which deserved to be cared for: This included special rights for tired animals, a kind of maternity leave for pregnant draught horses and even a form of ‘retirement homes’ for old cows.

Got my copy of 'Wasser als Ressource' - well worth a read for lots of interesting environmental history (in German) centered around water & Tyrol!

Hab mir Europa Universalis 5 angeschaut und war positiv überrascht von vielen neuen Nuancen & Details zu Geschichte, rekrutierte einen General und das Ganze gab dem den Namen...Fritzli Franz von Bern.

... irgendwie gibt's auch so was wie *zu* authentisch

Got stuck writing a chapter and instead rearranged my office space at home (+tidied up a bit in general) - not for the first time.

Does anyone else have a go-to activity to try and pry loose stuck mental gears?
Or a better kind of justification for procrastination I guess!

Some passages from the article - according to the study changes in land use is (up until now) the main cause for this kind of biodiversity loss rather than global warming.

It also shows, once again, how important environmental history is! Study wouldn't have been possible without historical data
“Our numbers show that land use was the main driver for diversity loss, far more than climate change at this stage,” Widmer says. The way farmers cut, graze and fertilise their fields shapes which plants survive. More nitrogen fertiliser, more frequent mowing and highly productive plants displacing native species all reduce plant diversity, the analysis shows. A list of all found plant species saw 117 losers and just six winners.

The whole thing was supervised by 7 men, who then swore, that the victims clothes hadn't changed at all or shown any signs during this process ("das sich die gwand nutz geendertt hab") - and because of that the suspect was acquitted!
