In a study I’m too lazy to find, they found that roughly equal №s either lost weight, gained weight, or stayed the same weight. So ineffective on the whole, but it works for some.

That matches my thinking perfectly, it does just seem like filler at a point. I added a bit more and called it a day.

Sounds incredible!

I know that feeling! They’ve wiped out our bean and lettuce crops before.

That’s brutal, hope you can get good results from survivors!

I’m also seeing slight bulbing at the base of the transplants, really hoping that doesn’t mean they’ll all bolt next year 😅

The onions I’m thinning from direct-seeded bed look better than the transplants from my 200 cell trays. Direct seeding seems a clear winner at present, but I may experiment with growing my own sets in raised beds next year. That would mitigate risk from a fall flood and allow better weed control.

This late in the season??

Robin is an incredible sleeper though, two weeks old and sleeping in ~3 hr stretches!

My fennel was the only unexpected loss, I really thought it would be fine with 23F. One bok choi variety is unexpectedly fine. Sprouting broccoli was a goner as expected, and I harvested and blanched about 4 lbs

Fingers crossed we get a little!

Hope both ways will be successful for you! I’ll be transplanting my short-day onions later this week hopefully. I will say, having automatic irrigation for direct seeded onions would have made my life much easier. We had what became a little drought with high temps right after they germinated.

Thanks Michael!

Onions look healthy with good germ and not too many gaps. Need to be thinned still. I decided to use some row cover to encourage more growth since they’re looking a little small at the onset of cold weather. Will remove once they have 4-5 leaves. Hybrids outgrowing OP variety so far.

Very tasty, and you can eat more than just the blanched part. But seed from Row 7 is expensive and not often available, so all the more reason to grow as a perennial.
