DHS says that Bovino threw a chemical canister out of necessity, citing "commercial artillery shell fireworks" and rocks thrown at officers. It's true that the order makes an exception for officer safety/safety of others; the video that plaintiff attys included didn't appear to show rocks/fireworks

if you want the MAGA perspective, look no further than Heritage's Mike Howell, who agrees that this will be used to target dissent

there's nothing like finding a semi-defunct publication doing incredibly detailed dives into things that maybe a few dozen people care about

Some on the right are really interested in the idea, though. Here's the head of the Claremont Institute complaining a few weeks ago that current SCOTUS precedent likely makes it impossible (in this case over participants in the LA ICE demonstrations)

Chernov fled Russia after he printed out flyers that said "Let’s think before signing a contract with the Russian Army. You’ll kill or be killed" and left them in a military recruitment office. Per search warrant, Russian cops raided his house while probing charges of discrediting the military

I spoke extensively with Chernov from immigration detention in Winn, Louisiana. He described wrenching conditions as more and more people are detained but fewer are allowed to leave

I've mostly had my head down on another project this week and missed Doug Wilson's response to our story on Memorial Day:

Per this declaration, ICE first informed the man from Myanmar's attorney that he would be removed to South Africa. Later, they said South Sudan.

When the atty checked the next day, he was told his client had been deported.

This all would violate the judge's injunction in this case

NEW filing: The Trump administration is trying to deport two people to South Sudan, attorneys in a Massachusetts case against DHS say. They're asking the judge for an emergency order blocking the removals

NEW: A Texas federal judge, appointed by Trump, blocks the govt from using the AEA to remove people.

The decision says that Trump failed to adequately describe an "invasion" or "predatory incursion" in his proclamation

Russia's attack on Kyiv last night was genuinely horrific. Ukrainian officials say that it killed at least 9 and left dozens injured.

The latest status report in Abrego Garcia is a repeat of yesterday's.

We know *far more* from Sen Van Hollen's visit than we do from what the govt has told the court. Per Van Hollen, Abrego Garcia was moved from CECOT to another facility last week

NEW: The ACLU files a "Notice of Warrant of Apprehension and Removal Under the Alien Enemies Act," issued to an unnamed Venezuelan.

The document contains a finding from "the President" that Tren de Aragua members are Alien Enemies, and that the recipient is a TdA member and an Alien Enemy

NEW: The Trump administration is on the verge of conducting another Alien Enemies removal flight, the ACLU says in court papers filed in the middle of the night.

Bukele says Abrego Garcia will remain in El Salvador's custody

Pretty bare-bones status report in Abrego Garcia today, apart from aggressively describing its noncompliance as "clear and unequivocal notice" about "how the government will facilitate Abrego Garcia's return"
April 17, 2025 at 8:56 PM
As eloquent as this is from Judge Wilkinson, it certainly suggests that the court doubts the Trump admin will eventually comply

With each day, a new justification: the DOJ gets its declaration in early today. Today, ICE official Joe Mazzara says that if Abrego Garcia appeared at a US port of entry, DHS would detain him, "remove him to a third country" or end the block on his deportation and ship him back to El Salvador
