Here's a great discussion about jazz violin with Leroy Jenkins, Billy Bang and John Blake Jr. hosted by Julie Lyonn:

Improvised Violin: Four Personal Views
In the 1980s, avant garde jazz violinist Leroy Jenkins approached me about making a film together. He asked me to design it and be one of the four violinists on…

I found one last almost-empty pocket music manuscript book! Mel Bay isn't making them anymore, so I'm psyched.

Doc Searls on an exciting standard-in-progress: MyTerms, where you get to determine what info about you companies can get at and use, rather than them imposing it on you.

The most important standard in development today
Update on 29 January 2025: P7012 draft is now nicknamed MyTerms (much as 802.11 is nicknamed Wi-Fi) moving toward completing the IEEE process and should be a working standard . In the meantime, the…

An excellent meeting in Holon last night. In addition to group improvisations by the ten of us, each conducted by a different member, I did a duet playing harmonica with another member manipulating two squawking rubber chickens, backed by a bed of voices.

Conduction #25: The Akbank Conduction / Conduction #26, E: Akbank II | Lawrence D. “Butch” Morris | New World Records
Conduction #25: The Akbank Conduction / Conduction #26, E: Akbank II by Lawrence D. “Butch” Morris, released 01 January 1995 1. Conduction #25: The Akbank Conduction 2. Conduction #26, E: Akbank II * This album was originally part of a (now out of print) 10-CD box set * The Akbank Conduction, Akbank II Istanbul, Turkey; October 16 & 17, 1992 Conducting is no longer a mere method for an interpretation, but an actual part of the process of composition. Conduction is a means by which a conductor may compose, (re)orchestrate, (re)arrange and sculpt both notated and non-notated music. Using a vocabulary of signs and gestures, many within the general glossary of traditional conducting, the conductor may alter or initiate rhythm, melody, and harmony; develop form and structure; and instantaneously change articulation, phrasing, and meter. Conduction is a viable musical tool for the improvising ensemble. —Butch Morris “Testament challenges not only conductors’ orthodoxy but the very vitals of music and music-making-no tradition is left untouched.... When the musical history of the 20th-century comes to be written, Testament will provide one of its most essential chapters.” —The Wire “The breadth of colors and compositional styles which Morris obtains from these various ensembles is breathtaking-Xenakis-like string textures, the haunting melisma of a single Turkish flute, a roaring tangle of Sun Ra horns, pointillistic atonal rainfall, a tapestry of cloudy orchestral chords.... The individual personality of each ensemble shines through-no two sound the same.” —Pulse!

OK, it looks like @fedica posted nicely to Mastodon, Bluesky, and X, but not the Meta apps (Facebook, Threads, Instagram). But they're the most important, I think. (I wonder what the sites will do with that at-tag.)

Testing cross-posting with Fedica. If this works, it should go to Facebook, X, Bluesky, and Threads. Here's an embedded Bandcamp link, to see what happens: (I'll be surprised and pleased if it works.)

Jerusaklyn (Archives Vol III: 1986-1989 Instrumentals) | Joseph Zitt
Jerusaklyn (Archives Vol III: 1986-1989 Instrumentals) by Joseph Zitt, released 01 January 1999 1. Impossible Things Before Breakfast 2. Floating Point 3. The Stainless Steel Rat 4. Svengali 5. Song for Charlie 6. The New Tax Laws and You 7. Theme by Rabbi Nachman 8. Circus Max 9. Spider Dance 10. Data Set Ready 11. Winter Watch 12. Recoil 13. Portable Face 14. Shadowcaster 15. Nightscape for Irene 16. And Your Little Dog Too 17. Osaka This may be my favorite of my archival albums. I released it in 1999 on MP3.com's DAM label as the third in my Cassette Archives series. It is as much unlike my other albums as they are unlike each other. Much of it is loud, raucous, and fun. (I'm also told that I could have tuned my guitar somewhat more precisely.) This would now be called "lo-fi," I guess. It was recorded on a 4-track cassette deck, mixed down to a consumer stereo cassette deck, then digitized to the fairly low-grade MP3s that were common two decades. Most of the music on Jerusaklyn was recorded for a cassette album that was never released. The CD contains all the material from that album, plus some additional tracks recorded for other purposes. I composed and performed all the music myself and recorded it in Brooklyn, NY, between 1986 and 1989, except "Theme" which is based on a traditional melody and includes found sounds I recorded at the Western Wall in Jerusalem, 1986. Thanks to those who inspired and encouraged this music including (but not limited to) Fayge Kleinbart, Manny Maris (from Lunch for Yor Ears), Shosh Forbes, and John, Gale, and Irene Cowan. Front cover art by Joseph Zitt from a 1988 photograph by Bob Izenberg and a text design by Bobby Corbell. If this were a vinyl release, it would be on four sides. The first two sides were intended for the cassette release. The third side was added for the CD release, and the fourth for its initial release online. SIDE ONE: Yes, That's My Real Name - Impossible Things Before Breakfast - Floating Point - The Stainless Steel Rat - Svengali - Song for Charlie - The New Tax Laws and You SIDE TWO: Variations on a Theme by Rabbi Nachman - Theme by Rabbi Nachman - Circus Max - Spider Dance - Data Set Ready - Winter Watch - Recoil SIDE THREE: More Tracks - Portable Face - Shadowcaster - Nightscape for Irene - And Your Little Dog Too SIDE FOUR: Osaka - Osaka The equipment for most of this consisted of: - PC-XT running the Texture sequencing software. - Casio CZ-101 synthesizer - Casio CZ-1000 synthesizer - Fender Stratocaster Guitar - Bass guitar (inexpensive, brand and model unknown) - Roland TR-505 drum machine - Tascam 4-track cassette recorder - Alesis Multiverb reverb unit - Various forgotten stompboxes for distortion, echo, etc. - Voice with forgotten microphone (track 15) - Sony recording walkman with stereo mic (track 7) - Acoustic guitar (brand and model unknown) (track 5) Some of the music that I recall having influenced these tracks: - Frank Zappa: Shut Up and Play Your Guitar - Ornette Coleman: Of Human Feelings - Charlie Haden: Closeness - Miles Davis: Decoy - Miles Davis: Pangaea - Miles Davis: Sketches of Spain - James Blood Ulmer: Are You Glad To Be In America? - Brian Eno: Before and After Science - The Lounge Lizards: Lounge Lizards - Public Image Limited: Second Edition - King Crimson: Three of a Perfect Pair - Material: Memory Serves

Well, it looks like my experiment with another site that claimed to cross-post easily to here & other similar sites is a dud. It hasn't, & even posts to the site itself fail to appear as they claim that they will. And they charge for access while promoting themselves as an open-seeming answer. Nope.

RIP to a real one. any point in her discography is worth investigating, but why not recommend "Central Palace Music," a 1976 work by Hennix’s just intonation ensemble The Deontic Miracle (Renaissance oboes, sinewave generators, sheng)
RIP Swedish-born composer, performer, multimedia artist, mathematician, and computer scientist Catherine Christer Hennix (1948–2023). This obituary was posted to IG by Blank Forms, a curatorial organization that presented concerts by Hennix and issued her recordings and writings.
