Liverpool, politics, theatre, wine, cricket, travel, Eurovison, family, republican (in the UK sense not US) - and more. Wry observations. General disdain.
Back to my room after a fascinating conversation at dinner with the sommelier in the hotel restaurant, to find this note next to a good bottle of Hungarian red. I travel a lot and I'm not easy to impress, but that's truly a moment of real service excellence.

Making a reservation at my very favourite wine place in Budapest. They're perhaps a little optimistic if they think I'm going to start drinking *that* early...

Nowhere on my travels do I encounter better wine at a decent price than here in Budapest. A beautiful Tokaji to follow a superb cabernet franc / merlot blend. And for the price of mediocre house wines in the UK.

Trying to work out why the hotel restaurant has brought over a small candle contraption for my grilled chicken.

Didn't realise Slot was managing the #LFC women's team too!

Hafod, Baron Bigot, Mrs Kirkham's Lancashire and Burford: an absolutely stunning cheese selection after dinner this evening from the gorgeous @rennetandrind.bsky.social in Stamford - deservedly one of The Times' top cheese shops in the UK.

What weird dreams await after so much cheese, I wonder?!

Santa special! Thanks to all the volunteers at the Nene Valley Railway for setting up a special day for the kids...

Meeting your heroes is great, and former #LFC goalkeeper Bruce Grobelaar is one of mine. Even more so now I see the 97 in his signature paying respect to the Hillsborough victims. Pure class. #JFT97 #YNWA

Impressive cover today: good stuff from the Liverpool Echo

What utter nonsense. When our daughter was watching Peppa Pig a couple of years ago, I loved Daddy Pig. A witty portrayal of a much-loved, caring parent far removed from the idea that alpha masculinity is the only option for men.

Priceless!

Corbyn's party name shortlist is missing the obvious "... For The Few".

Paddington is in contention to be Christmas number 1. But, frankly, this comparison by ITV is incredibly rude to such a distinguished bear.

Anyone seen Hamnet yet? It came out in the States yesterday and I want to know if Jessie Buckley is really as great in it as the odds suggest.

Thanks to @thewinesociety.bsky.social for today's delivery...

Who needs a teddy bear when you live with Maine Coons?
November 22, 2025 at 9:07 PM
This was the slices of Christmas cake - I guess they do a full cake too. Better than the one I've made, I'm sure!

This, from the Guardian, is Ryanair at its very worst.

It's not good enough for them to insist that they're a low-cost airline and everyone knows the rules, in circumstances like this...

I wonder if legislation is needed?

Flyer sent from theatre in Milton Keynes advertising their panto.

Photos of 12 cast members / dancers. Eleven men (one in panto drag) and one woman.

Don't think we'll take our six-year-old daughter, then.

Seriously, in 2025?

Starmer needs to sack the cabinet secretary this evening. No room or need for delay.
November 20, 2025 at 7:42 PM
A "perverse" and deeply immoral policy. Labour have misjudged this so badly.
November 18, 2025 at 10:48 PM
Shameful.

Labour have utterly lost the moral plot.

The end of The Times obituary of Rachel Cooke is quite brilliant, and unbearably sad.
