When I tried to ask Atlas questions about the front page of the New York Times, a message popped up that said “ChatGPT is unable to access the contents of this website,” likely due to the ongoing lawsuit between OpenAI and the newspaper.

xAI just sued OpenAI alleging theft of company secrets. xAI is accusing OpenAI of “inducing” recruits from xAI to steal company secrets. In the complaint, xAI includes an emailed response from a “senior finance executive” when confronted for breaching confidentiality when leaving for OpenAI:

But no company has ever burned as much money as OpenAI is planning to. In the last few weeks, major deals with BroadcomAVGO $365.17 (1.47%) and OracleORCL $299.26 (2.42%) have thrown into sharp relief just how insane OpenAI’s ambitions are. The Oracle deal alone is worth $300 billion over five years starting in 2027. OpenAI does not have that kind of cash. In fact, four of the tech world’s big “cash incinerators” — Uber, Tesla, Snap, and Netflix — together burned a pathetic ~$42 billion during their respective heavily cash-burning periods.

Here’s how people are are actually using ChatGPT

A new study by OpenAI is one of the largest surveys of real-world AI use.

What stood out to me was how utilitarian the usage of ChatGPT was. People are just using it to make their work better, and figure things out.

Some of the big takeaways from the paper: 💃 70% (!!!) of all queries were not related to work. That number may send a chill down the spine of Big Tech as it is betting on enterprise AI to generate enough revenue to justify the hundreds of billions it is spending to build out AI infrastructure. 📝 Among work-related messages, the most common use for ChatGPT is writing, and mostly just to modify or improve a users’s text. Writing queries made up 42% of work-related messages, and 52% of all messages from users who work in business and management. 🙋🏻 About half (49%) of all queries were classified as “asking” – for guidance, advice or information. 40% of messages were requests classified as “doing” — asking the chatbot to complete a task. 👩‍💻 Female users made up more than half of all queries, as of July 2025. This is a massive shift from early on, when the vast majority of users were male. But it’s worth noting that the study determined this by classifying first names as masculine or feminine. 🛹 The youth love AI. Half of all messages were from adults under 26.
