Sociology sometimes. Goal is to be the most boring poster on the internet. I can't believe I have to say this, but these views are mine alone.
The correct interpretation of "two cloves of garlic"

Canada isn't exactly what you would call a "rural" country in the way I grew up thinking about it. This is a population map of Canada. You see that white area? That's not mostly not "rural," that's mostly the forest (and wildlife, and mountains). Only about 10% of Canada's population lives there.

One thing to remember about Canada is that if you pick a random place in Canada you'll wind up in a place with almost no people. But if you pick a random person in Canada, there is a decent chance the person lives pretty close to a place like this:

I think there's also a place for Rose the Hat, although without the knowledge of what she is it would go over most people's heads.

When the people who create a graph call it a "visualization" it always looks something like this:

I spend a lot of time being very annoyed with "now more than ever-ism." David Autor / Larry Summers define it like this.

It is useless to repeat that we need to deregulate everything / abolish capitalism / foster "civil debate" on campus / etc. in response to *everything.*

The whole website was clearly sold to them as a package and they literally didn't even bother to even change the fake text. The phone number has an Illinois area code. They have different addresses in different parts of the site. Here is their answer to "Does your pepperoni contain gluten?"

This is good. Reminds me of my favorite alignment chart, from here:

The art that @rmcelreath.bsky.social shows below is from The Giant Storybook Project, created by Herakut. I don't know if they ever assembled it into a book but I do think it would be incredible to do a tour to see all of the "pages" in order. This is the one near my house in Toronto.

I was right. Here's the picture of it I found online. Pretty amazing.

I bet you anything that was done by Herakut, and pretty confident that it is part of The Giant Storybook Project. There's a mural right by my house here in Toronto that is in almost exactly the same style. This is what it looks like:

DAGs are a great tool for the person making them but for everyone else it always looks like this:

My all time favorite comment on a course evaluation for a class I taught was this one from my time as a grad student at UNC. I loved it so much I've kept it handy for over 10 years.

The only packaging that comes to mind for canned fish is this guy who is encouraging customers to eat his friends and family.

There are only TWO people who do this that I'm eligible to vote for this time around. The first is @courtneyboen.bsky.social, and the second is @ashleytrubin.bsky.social.

The only thing I want is people to run to *do* something. That's it. Please vote for them.

This is a pretty wild post by @natehaines.bsky.social and you will need to have patience, but the payoff is great.

It also includes this shockingly accurate meme:

Apparently it is at least partially the latter. From the linked article:

Pakistan teetering on civil war. You would think everyone would know that supporting a group called "Taliban" that is best friends with the group also called "Taliban" that wants to overthrow your country is a bad idea, and yet:

This is funny. Canada joining the EU is a political non-starter for literally dozens of reasons, but the accession talks might be worth it to see the reaction / meltdown in the British press.

This is the description of propensity score matching from Social Indicators Research's guidance for authors. 👀🤭
