I was at home in Kilkee for a few days with my daughter. Lots of swims and walks regardless of the wee breeze. This was the cliff walk yesterday. The Pollock Holes were magic this morning. It really is a wonderful part of the world.

Background to the call It is a prescient irony, given the stubborn conception that men ‘don’t express feelings’, that the contemporary bonds, behaviours and excesses of masculinity are so deeply immersed in emotion. It has long been recognised that that men’s conflicts are steeped in emotional experiences and dynamics of shame, irritability and anger (Men’s Project and Flood 2024). Similarly, hegemonic and toxic acts often stem from emotions such as pride and fear (Connell and Messerschmidt 2005). Traditional masculinities have also been implicated in men’s desires and struggles to master their own and other’s emotions, whether this be in the context of emotional control (Barrett & Bliss-Moreau, 2009), couple relationships (McQueen, 2017) or emotional flooding (Malik et al 2020). Other works have advanced the study of masculine emotion beyond these dynamics. Some have pointed out that emotional suppression leaves a stark legacy for many men, making them more susceptible to distress and suicide (River and Flood 2021). More recent studies have focussed on the presence and role of more positive emotions in men’s lives. ‘Inclusive’ masculine acts are often steeped in care, respect and love (Anderson 2018, Elliott 2019). National surveys reveal that while men’s ‘primary’ (surface) emotions confirm to hegemonic stereotypes of male emotion (e.g. confidence), their ‘secondary’ emotions are commonly care based and oriented towards families (Patulny et al 2017). Other studies point to the important role of emotions such as pride, fun and confidence in the formation of homosocial bonds (Messner 2013) and focus on men’s capacity to consider emotional reflexively, rather than reject it in favour of ‘rationality’ (Holmes 2015). Yet these studies touch on only a handful of the many issues now surfacing around men, masculinities and emotions. Golden Mothers Driving West by Paul Durcan The inevitable call came from the Alzheimer’s nursing home. Mummy had been sitting there in an armchair for two years In a top-storey room with two other aged ladies, Deborah O’Donoghue and Maureen Timoney. Three Irish orang-utans, silent, stationary. The call was to say that between 3 and 5 a.m. The three of them had gone missing from the room. At first it was thought that all three had slipped Out the window, ajar in the hot, humid night. But, no, there were no torsos in the flowerbed. It transpired that a car had also gone missing. Was it thinkable they had commandeered a car? At five in the afternoon the police called To say that a Polish youth in a car wash in Kinnegad Had washed and hot-waxed a car for three ladies, All of whom were wearing golden dressing gowns – Standard issue golden dressing gowns Worn by all the inmates of the Alzheimer’s nursing home. Why he remembered them was that he was struck By the fact that all three ladies were laughing For the ten minutes it took him to wash the car. ‘I am surprised,’ he stated, ‘by laughter.’ At 9 p.m. the car was sighted in Tarmonbarry On the Roscommon side of the River Shannon, Parked at the jetty of the Emerald Star marina. At 9.30 p.m. a female German child was taken To the police station at Longford by her stepfather. The eleven-year-old had earlier told her stepfather In the cabin of their hired six-berth river cruiser That she had seen three ladies jump from the bridge. Her stepfather had assumed his daughter imagined it As she was, he told police, ‘a day-dreamer born’. The girl repeated her story to the police: How three small, thin, aged ladies with white hair Had, all at once, together, jumped from the bridge, Their dressing gowns flying behind them in the breeze. 'What colours were the dressing gowns?' she was asked. ‘They are wearing gold,’ she replied. Wreathed on the weir downstream from the bridge Police sub-aqua divers retrieved the three bodies, One of whom, of course, was my own emaciated mother, Whose fingerprints were later found on the wheel of the car. She had been driving west, west to Westport, Westport on the west coast of Ireland in the County of Mayo, Where she had grown up with her mother and sisters In the War of Independence and the Civil War, Driving west to Streamstown three miles outside Westport, Where on afternoons in September in 1920, Ignoring the roadblocks and the assassinations, They used walk down Sunnyside by the sea’s edge, The curlews and the oystercatchers, The upturned black currachs drying out on the stones, And picnic on the machair grass above the seaweed, Under the chestnut trees turning autumn gold And the fuchsia bleeding like troupes of crimson-tutu’d Ballerinas in the black hedgerows. I've finally gotten hold of this 1094-page monster after some delays with the publisher. Most academics use a sabbatical to write a book. I might need one to read this.

Looking forward to it. John Levi Martin remains one of the most original and insightful social theorists we have.

I love to read this poem at this time of year. Despite all the darkness and horror of these times, we go on and we go again, into a bright spring morning where birds are dancing.
Easter Morning (April, 1979, A R. AMMONS) I have a life that did not become, that turned aside and stopped, astonished: I hold it in me like a pregnancy or as on my lap a child not to grow old but dwell on it is to his grave I most frequently return and return to ask what is wrong, what was wrong, to see it all by the light of a different necessity but the grave will not heal and the child, stirring, must share my grave with me, an old man having gotten by on what was left when I go back to my home country in these fresh far-away days, it’s convenient to visit everybody, aunts and uncles, those who used to say, look how he’s shooting up, and the trinket aunts who always had a little something in their pocketbooks, cinnamon bark or a penny or nickel, and uncles who were the rumored fathers of cousins who whispered of them as of great, if troubled, presences, and school teachers, just about everybody older (and some younger) collected in one place waiting, particularly, but not for me, mother and father there, too, and others close, close as burrowing under skin, all in the graveyard assembled, done for, the world they used to wield, have trouble and joy in, gone the child in me that could not become was not ready for others to go, to go on into change, blessings and horrors, but stands there by the road where the mishap occurred, crying out for help, come and fix this or we can’t get by, but the great ones who were to return, they could not or did not hear and went on in a flurry and now, I say in the graveyard, here lies the flurry, now it can’t come back with help or helpful asides, now we all buy the bitter incompletions, pick up the knots of horror, silently raving, and go on crashing into empty ends not completions, not rondures the fullness has come into and spent itself from I stand on the stump of a child, whether myself or my little brother who died, and yell as far as I can, I cannot leave this place, for for me it is the dearest and the worst, it is life nearest to life which is life lost: it is my place where I must stand and fail, calling attention with tears to the branches not lofting boughs into space, to the barren air that holds the world that was my world though the incompletions (& completions) burn out standing in the flash high-burn momentary structure of ash, still it is a picture-book, letter-perfect Easter morning: I have been for a walk: the wind is tranquil: the brook works without flashing in an abundant tranquility: the birds are lively with voice: I saw something I had never seen before: two great birds, maybe eagles, blackwinged, whitenecked and –headed, came from the south oaring the great wings steadily; they went directly over me, high up, and kept on due north: but then one bird, the one behind, veered a little to the left and the other bird kept on seeming not to notice for a minute: the first began to circle as if looking for something, coasting, resting its wings on the down side of some of the circles: the other bird came back and they both circled, looking perhaps for a draft; they turned a few more times, possibly rising—at least, clearly resting— then flew on falling into distance till they broke across the local bush and trees: it was a sight of bountiful majesty and integrity: the having patterns and routes, breaking from them to explore other patterns or better ways to routes, and then the return: a dance sacred as the sap in the trees, permanent in its descriptions as the ripples round the brook’s ripplestone: fresh as this particular flood of burn breaking across us now from the sun.

During my morning ablutions, Kinsella's well known poem 'Mirror in February' drifted in. I am a good deal older than he was then, alas, with darker eyes, everything downturning.

Sure, we keep going.
The day dawns, with scent of must and rain, Of opened soil, dark trees, dry bedroom air. Under the fading lamp, half dressed – my brain Idling on some compulsive fantasy – I towel my shaven jaw and stop, and stare, Riveted by a dark exhausted eye, A dry downturning mouth. It seems again that it is time to learn, In this untiring, crumbling place of growth To which, for the time being, I return. Now plainly in the mirror of my soul I read that I have looked my last on youth And little more; for they are not made whole That reach the age of Christ. So many of my favorite writers of #specfic are women and this year I finally read and absolutely loved Ammonite by @nicolaz.bsky.social. This is an all-female story, too, with beautiful prose and anthropological depth in its world building. Highly recommend for #IWD2025!

I keep thinking of Hobbes's 'will to battle', so brilliantly evoked in @adapalmer.bsky.social's magnificent Terra Ignota series, which stretches the temporal horizon of war to encompass not only actual violence but the time when the tendancy towards becoming violent begins to manfest.

Feels apt.

Maybe poetry will save us. This is 'Poetics' by A.R.Ammons, a wonderful and, I think, underrated American poet.

This poem is about his own approach to poetry, which is rooted in a processual understanding of nature, broadly conceived.

This is the Call for Papers for the 11th Midterm Conference of the European Sociological Association’s Sociology of Emotions Research Network (RN11). The Midterm Conference will be hosted in 2025 by the Queen’s University Belfast, Northern Ireland, and will take place from August 26 to August 29, 2025. All high-quality abstracts with a substantial focus on emotions will be given serious consideration. Abstracts not exceeding 300 words should be submitted by February 28, 2025 via email: rn11midterm2025@protonmail.me A Workshop for PhD Students will be held on August 26, 2025, hosted by Prof. Mary Holmes and Dr. Jonathan Heaney. The workshop will provide feedback on the participants’ projects and encourage discussions on themes related to the Sociology of Emotions. PhD candidates working with emotions in their research are invited to participate. Please indicate your interest in your proposal and submit a one-page description of your project, highlighting the role of emotions in your work. Notifications regarding selected abstracts and PhD proposals for presentation at the midterm conference will be sent in mid-April 2025. Proposed Sessions: Emotions in Post-Conflict Societies: While the sociology of emotions has helped us understand the dynamics of violence and war, less attention has been paid to post-conflict contexts. Yet, the emotional legacy associated with the different roles of perpetrator, victim, and witness becomes more complex when all three roles apply to the same persons/entities. Tensions remain between approaches focused on the management of emotions with an eye towards the future (associated with peace, reconciliation, and healing) and those focused on the acknowledgement of the hurt and harm of the past, while the fundamental question of power is often sidelined. In this session we welcome all papers that bring the sociology of emotions critically to bear on post-conflict/post-violence societies. Emotions, Environmental Crises and Sustainability: Climate change and other environmental crises can lead to emotions such as guilt, fear, blame, etc. How are these emotions involved, or not, in socio-ecological transformation? How and why can they influence the trajectory of climate action and sustainability efforts. Some research also highlights emotions such as solastalgia, eco-anxiety, eco-enthusiasm, apathy etc. Are they representative of new emotional states? How can they be theorized from a Sociology of Emotions perspective? All contributions dealing with the relation between climate change, sustainability and emotions are welcome here. Emotions in Family and Intimate Lives: Intimate and family life may seem like the primary sphere of emotions. While this notion could be contested on other grounds, closer analysis also shows how emotions in intimate spheres are complexly embedded into larger social processes and macro-sociological structures. Research on love and friendship is particularly welcome within this theme. Collective Emotions, Identity and Solidarity: How do groups form and endure, and what role do emotions, affects, and feelings play in these processes? How does "collective identity" relate to emotions, and what insights does "collective emotions" offer in understanding solidarity? Difference and Emotional Othering: Emotions, affects and feelings also play a fundamental role in creating boundaries between social groups. How do processes of othering work similarly yet also distinctively across different categories of diversity (race, class, gender, age, disability and health, sexuality, religion and others) as well as intersectionally? Emotional foundations of everyday discrimination in societies, which are structurally racist, sexist, ableist etc... Migration, Globalization and Emotions: Emotions in Organizations: Emotion, Reason and Law: Emotion, Protest, Opposition and Social Movements: Emotions, Politics and the State: Emotions, Finance and Political Economy: Emotion, Discourse, Media and Literature: Emotions, Morality and Normativity: Emotion and Religion: Theoretical Considerations of Affects, Feelings and Emotions: Sociological frameworks for analysing emotions, feelings, and affects have evolved over decades but remain ripe for innovation. As interest in these concepts grows, we encourage the development of new theories and their integration into broader sociological and interdisciplinary contexts. Theories connecting emotions with status and power are particularly welcome. Methodologies for Researching Emotions and Digital Methods: Building on previous discussions, this session explores how emotions can be studied empirically, both qualitatively and quantitatively.
