We had a fantastic week at the ESA Sociology of Emotions Midterm in QUB this week. A brilliant PhD workshop, three days of fascinating papers on a host of topics, and two outstanding keynotes from @sinisamalesevic.bsky.social and @isabelbramsen.bsky.social (thank you both!).

I was at home in Kilkee for a few days with my daughter. Lots of swims and walks regardless of the wee breeze. This was the cliff walk yesterday. The Pollock Holes were magic this morning. It really is a wonderful part of the world.

My swanky @goldsborobooks.bsky.social edition of The Incandescent by @emilytesh.net just arrived. I'm excited to read this one!

I was also very sorry to hear of the death of Durcan. I can't find my copy of his collection 'A Snail in my Prime', which I loved, but this one is special too.

Great film and discussion at the QFT tonight. Powerful, moving documentary. Watching today underscores the tragedy unfolding before our eyes. Thanks to @drdrewmikhael.bsky.social for his insightful contributions, the audience for their questions/comments, and the guys at the qft for hosting us.

I've finally gotten hold of this 1094-page monster after some delays with the publisher. Most academics use a sabbatical to write a book. I might need one to read this.

Looking forward to it. John Levi Martin remains one of the most original and insightful social theorists we have.

I've had to shoot off a wee bit early but what a fantastic #SAIcon25 we have had in Cork! Thanks to the outgoing committee and the organizers for all their hard work. New SAI committee incoming (mostly pictured below), including myself as VP. More to follow on this - looking forward to it!

Day 2 of #SAIcon25 and we have a keynote from Dr Philomena Mullen of TCD called 'Trapped in the comments section of offline and online worlds: antiblackness and digital pogrom'.

Fantastic day at the @sociologyireland.bsky.social #SAIcon25 in UCC. Great keynote from @gemakloppe.bsky.social on religion, violence and the state in Mexico. Now about to have dinner at the Glucksman.

Really enjoyed presenting in the first theory panel at the #SAIcon25 with these great people.

Interesting, wide-ranging panel discussing the far-right, home, borders and the role of sociology.

We had a lovely walk and a dip here yesterday. The light and colours of the West of Ireland are a tonic for the mind and body.

Easter Morning

(April, 1979, A R. AMMONS)

I love to read this poem at this time of year. Despite all the darkness and horror of these times, we go on and we go again, into a bright spring morning where birds are dancing.

'The wind has bundled up the clouds high over Knocknarea,
And thrown the thunder on the stones for all that Maeve can say'

During my morning ablutions, Kinsella's well known poem 'Mirror in February' drifted in. I am a good deal older than he was then, alas, with darker eyes, everything downturning.

Sure, we keep going.

We walked up Croagh Patrick on Saturday (my sins are small so I wore shoes), which was beautiful. Felt very far away from the chaos up there.

So many of my favorite writers of #specfic are women and this year I finally read and absolutely loved Ammonite by @nicolaz.bsky.social. This is an all-female story, too, with beautiful prose and anthropological depth in its world building. Highly recommend for #IWD2025!

I keep thinking of Hobbes's 'will to battle', so brilliantly evoked in @adapalmer.bsky.social's magnificent Terra Ignota series, which stretches the temporal horizon of war to encompass not only actual violence but the time when the tendancy towards becoming violent begins to manfest.

Feels apt.

Maybe poetry will save us. This is 'Poetics' by A.R.Ammons, a wonderful and, I think, underrated American poet.

This poem is about his own approach to poetry, which is rooted in a processual understanding of nature, broadly conceived.

My brilliant @qubelfastofficial.bsky.social #sociology colleague & friend @valtglas.bsky.social has a new book coming out soon with @tandfresearch.bsky.social about the judaization of evangelical Christianity, based on a years-long ethnography of a messianic congregation in N. Ireland. Recommended!
