"At the trial of God, we will ask: why did you allow all this?
And the answer will be an echo: why did you allow all this?"

- from Ilya Kaminsky's poem, "A City Like a Guillotine Shivers on Its Way to a Neck"

"On Black Friday, take your dog for a walk, go on a hike, explore a beach, get out on the water, play a board game, spend time with those who matter," Richard Coolidge writes in this column.

And, "also remember to put down your phone." https://to.pbs.org/3TJzFVD
Column: This Black Friday, do something different. Get outdoors
This year on Black Friday, take your dog for a walk, go on a hike, explore a beach, get out on the water, play a board game, spend time with those who matter.

Journalists on the White House beat absolutely must stop accepting abusive behavior from the president. They're normalizing conduct that no one should tolerate, especially from an elected public servant. Letting a government official address you this way sends a terrible message to your audience.

I love a sonnet.

The octave, general in terms, listing the necessities love fails to provide. Then in the sestet, more personal, and challenging the idea that ‘Love is All’. But even with that, at the end, the poet does not think she would trade or sell it for solace.

Poems with special guest interludes. I like it.💡
If I ever get poetry famous, it'd be cool to be like a rap star who features friends on tracks. Give a stanza to a writer pal the way rappers give a verse to their buddies. Like, "[Title] featuring @readinstead.bsky.social" etc.

Thank you.
I swore an oath to the Constitution in 1986. I've upheld it through 25 years of service and every day since I retired.

If Trump's trying to intimidate me, it won’t work. I’ve given too much to our country to be silenced by bullies who care more about power than the Constitution.

Corporate news media didn't *fail* to meet the moment. They *cultivated* it. And they deserve to go extinct. The future is non-profit independent journalism.
New in PN: @mattgertz.bsky.social on the Orbanization of the press

"Everyone just accepts that of course the FCC will only allow a merger if it goes to a person that Trump wants to own it. That’s a very precipitous decline in our broad public assumptions of how govt power is supposed to be wielded"
The Orbanization of the American press
"The really unnerving thing is Trump using state power to influence who a company gets sold to," Matt Gertz tells us.

This is knockout work from a poet I'm just learning about. Wow. The religious allusions. The line breaks (and prose). The high/low of it all. Love it.🖤

Great analysis of the numbers. I don't agree with all of the takeaways from the "experts" - but no one else is doing political analysis like this in Rochester.
Trend or anomaly? - Rochester Beacon
Monroe County’s suburbs elected more Democrats than ever in November. Is this an indication of a lasting enrollment shift or a cluster of fluke victories?

Re-upping this since approval ratings have been popping up in my feed again. (What was Nixon's approval rating when he resigned and how long did it take to get there? See thread.)
For context for current events, it can be useful to keep an eye on presidential approval rating. /1

💯
The BIG amendments are principles, rather than specifics. So: cementing voting rights, an end to partisan gerrymandering, and big money out of politics sort of scope. Throw EC into that larger idea of stopping an elite from taking over the election process, rather than focusing on one aspect of it.
