One of the nice benefits of being published in a print quarterly is that during the three months it is in the wild, so to speak, its contents are considered "current." In today's issue of @thesundaylongread.bsky.social, my piece for the summer issue of @theamscho.bsky.social has been included:

This documentary is a reminder of how messy politics can be, that it is decidedly not for the faint of heart. (The brisket, on the other hand, made it all worth it.) 2/2

1981 was a redistricting year in Texas and my first assignment for CBS News was to work on a documentary about the Texas Legislature: THE BEST LITTLE STATEHOUSE IN TEXAS. We made an unconventional choice of correspondent in Texas writer Larry L. King and it was the right one. 1/2

In Charlottesville, a simple but irrecoverably elegant dress was hiding in plain sight--and, as it happens, doing far more than that. My newest piece, in the summer issue of The American Scholar:

In @nytimes.com review of Jessa Crispin's WHAT'S WRONG WITH MEN, centering on Michael Douglas, there is mention of Maureen Dowd at the end, but, oddly, no mention of her own relationship with Douglas.

So Mr. Big Shot decides he wants to deport people to Libya. How will he--and this--be stopped? I wish I hadn't read this before bed, but the truth is I have not been sleeping well anyway these past 3 1/2 months.

@amyargetsinger.bsky.social How sweet it is to see the byline of Amy Argetsinger back in the Washington Post and in these unsettling times. Her gimlet eye and take on things are irreplaceable.

In the world of basketball, there has been one Ice Man--George Gervin. But in the larger and wider world there was the original Ice Man--Jerry Butler. From the moment I first saw him at the Uptown Theater in North Philly, he has always been part of my musical inner circle. Now he is gone. R.I.P.

Marianne Faithfull was my Mona Lisa. I was in 8th grade when "As Tears Go By" came out and I listened to it more times than I could ever remember. It made me feel that there was something else out there, but what that was I had no clear idea. When I went to work in London 1/2
