Seeing friends I hadn’t seen in too long. The best part of cons.

9) l will stop at nine, though I could go on and on. I was lucky to be introduced to comics when I was (as we all were when we were) because it was just as there was about to be an explosion of indie publishers. This issue works as a stand-in, because I don’t want to be here posting all day, and

8)This isn’t the first Golden art I saw, but it’s become the avatar (am I using that correctly?) for all Michael Golden comics and it is funnybook perfection.

Importance of that hint at something better and more interesting is immeasurable.

6) baby’s first superhero comic, given to me by a cousin one summer. I immediately became obsessed with tracking down back issues, and that’s the disease, isn’t it.

5) for a short while one of my sisters dabbled at a commercial art degree. She bailed pretty quickly, and I inherited the draughting table my dad had brought home for her from the ad agency where he was briefly a salesman. With it, I inherited a stack of Heavy Metal. 3) I was a nut for Conan in my tweens & teens & a buddy, who also read Conan, took me back to that same book shop years later turned me onto Savage Sword. Not for certain this was my first, but it’s the one that made an impact. And no, I don’t know why I hadn’t taken notice of the comics before.

Loved MAD. I don’t know that this was my first issue, but there’s a good chance it was.

2) I loved KISS (and still do) and I think it was because of this my dad took me to a used book/comic shop that became the shop of my youth, Golden’s Book Exchange. It’s still there, but they barely do comics.

I’m really terrible at these things- my brain doesn’t work ins way that allows me to narrow down things I love to favorites, and I have a terrible memory, but since it’s Picacio asking I’ll try my best to pick some (probably not nine) that mean a lot.

1) I didn’t read “comics” as a kid, but I

I absolutely love Everett’s inks on Andru’s Defenders, not just for his flat refusal to clean up the pencils, but his “fuck it” choice to ink every goddamn squiggly line.
