Part of the issue is that banks are not holding mortgages for >1yr after underwriting. They're largely in the biz of collecting fees then off loading the loans for syndication. If it's not a confirming loan requirement, there's not much incentive for a bank to change their origination process.

Yeah, people are just being reflexively anti-tech in this thread. I take then all the time in LA. I assure you, they can handle twin cities traffic just fine.
