I have no desire to give up academia - it's a brutal career, but it's mine, and I'm good at it - but even if I wanted to, there's no chance I could afford to.

...and especially don't pirate them if you give a single shit about the continued existence of works coming from outside the US, where it doesn't take many lost sales *at all* to make publishing them non-viable.

Anyway: don't pirate books under circumstances (libraries exist! in many places, authors make more off lending rights than off royalties!)...
