Per capita, there are way more batteries and e-bikes in circulation in Taiwan, and while you see reports of fires, I just don't get the sense it's happening on the same scale for a variety of reasons - like the availability of charging and swapping infrastructure

It has to do with the make and quality of batteries for sure, but as big if not the bigger factor is the age and quality of our housing stock. You can still find cloth wiring in some older, rent-stabilized buildings in New York! That is a fire trap when you plug in a battery or balcony solar.

Just look at e-bikes (which I personally love to ride and would love to own), outside the US there are only isolated reports of charging bike batteries causing fires. In the US and New York specifically, they’re involved in hundreds of fires a year.

Reminds me of one of my favorite Wikipedia articles, “Long-term nuclear waste warning messages.” May the BECCS burial cult reign a thousand years!

In a way it’s an advance to put the debate in such clear and losing terms for them. The majority worldwide want their leaders to fight fossil fuels!

it's beautiful how Star Trek and the Strugatsky's Noon Universe start from the same essential premise that, in the future, full communism has been achieved on Earth and humanity is just chilling exploring the stars

Development banks are structuring some of these policies and offering financial backing which is great, and the good thing about parametric policies is the money is released immediately once the parameters are met — but with Beryl the parameters weren’t met, so the policy didn’t pay out

If they can go after these powerful individuals, what's to stop the federal government from frivolous actions after anyone they want with NSPM-7?
