Nice thread!

One of my favorite subreddit diversions, if you don’t mind me linking, r/desirepath. The photos are great, the window into the human psyche, and as you point out, also a window into the shared living psyche.

BMI seems like a very convenient, but also inadequate, measure of obesity.
They mention visceral fat being predictive of metabolic disorders (T2D risk), yet this was not assessed directly.

I don’t know what the right funding model is for scientific literature, but 13 years later it’s still $39.95 USD to read.
Seems not ideal.

Open access alternative to consider, which itself links to freely available tools:

Thank you, I guess that’s fair.
I only saw this blurb summary that did not include that detail, since the article is not open access. shrug

I’ll be curious why they used model 1 at all, and whether their findings/summary were based on Model 1 or 2.

Blaming the one component used to help control BG is some irony. (Not to mention that T1D and T2D are distinct mechanisms, more detail than they described anyway.)

So… more non-sugar sweetener
-> associated with diabetics
-> associated w mental decline

Improve the diabetic treatment.

They found people more likely to be diabetic in the non-sugar sweetener highest tertile grouping.
So I suspect they “found” that people with blood glucose dysregulation is associated with cognitive deficits, known bc people with consistent extreme high BG experience cognitive decline.

My theory goes further after reading the design and results. Non-sugar sweeteners are certainly a proxy for something else, and what could that be?
They did not adjust for diabetic/non, nor for carb/calorie intake, nor A1C.

I feel like, ironically, this minor change was made itself like a footnote. $15 billion in funding re-enabled, also as if on a whim.
What a story it would be to know how $15B were turned off then back on overnight.

Edit: Welp, House ended their session early, to return only in September after the fiscal year has ended. So… there’s nobody to take action.
Calculated. Ironically, only Trump can call them back into session. Somehow NIH has to become more a distraction then “other topics” for that to happen.

Also, didn’t OMB force the firing of thousands of government employees and contract employees? (Yes.)
They’re not even honest in allowing expenses for employees.

I mean, that’s what they say.
Haha. jk

Sensing the electrical impulse of muscle contractions in muddy water, well enough to hunt for food. Pretty phenomenal.

I guess it’s like smelling static electricity? I have a hard time imagining it, but it must be a fun skill.
July 2, 2025 at 10:48 PM
You could say a platypus might be able to “smell” electricity? They have electroreceptors. (Surely someone is a platypus expert around here and can explain.)
Seems like a neat trick.
I can’t imagine a platypus having need for that kind of skill. Maybe they’re using their own wifi somehow.
