Did some literal back of the envelope math today because it was the closest piece of paper to me. Am I real scientist now? 🤓

New PhD preprint! We studied the effects of habitat and multi-stage life cycles on salamander limb bones! Aquatic and terrestrial spp. have divergent morphs + semi-aquatic and multi-phasic spp. do their own thing + decoupled external and internal shape promote diversity. 🧪🦎

Excited to share the first paper from my PhD!

We looked at what traits help Aneides salamanders excel at climbing using museum specimens, CT scans, SEM, and more! No claws or toe pads, so how do they do it? In short, with long limbs, big feet and grippy toes! 🦎🧪

In @fishguy.bsky.social’s lab we have done many studies on the suction cups of dead clingfish. In this new paper, @fishyologist.bsky.social et al and I found that clingfish can control their suction and stick harder than dead ones! @sicbjournals.bsky.social 🐟 🧪

That’s too many limbs

One reason I love this project is because of how many different tools and techniques we used. Field collections, high-speed feeding videos, CT scans of the jaw bones and muscles, scanning electron micrographs of the teeth, and lip histology....truly a tour de force of fun science.

New fish paper! We found that Clinocottus globicpes eats anemones (weird!) using a novel wrestling behavior + strong jaws that likely started as adaptations for tearing algae. It also has thick skin that protects it from stinging cells. @jzoology.bsky.social 🐟🧪

At long last I have finally seen anoles in the wild and not in museum jars or zoos. @sofishtication.bsky.social

Hey #SICB2025! Come find out what makes a climbing salamander tomorrow (Sunday at 1:45pm in A704) in the DCB best student presentation competition.

I am presenting the culmination of two PhD chapters. If you think you’ve seen this talk before, I promise that there will be a bunch of new data.

Starting an OF account….that’s right OnlyFeets. Specifically salamander feet pics. My handle will be @ SallyMandy

I have been thinking about clingfish bones lately. Maybe it's time to dig up and finish an old project 🐟

New paper! You can ID Anolis ecomorphs from just an arm! We (Kevin de Queiroz et al) compared the arm morphology of a fossil anole in amber to those of extant Anolis species. We can pretty confidently say the fossil belongs to a Trunk ecomorph lineage. 🧪 🦎

Dragged my parents out for a hike to look for salamanders. Found many but no arboreal climbing salamanders 😔

@kacorn.bsky.social delivered a wonderful seminar at GW Biology today as our grad student invited speaker!

Fish bite! And it makes reef fish evolve really fast!

Out sampling Green Salamanders again this week in Kentucky (with proper permits).

Found this very large individual but unfortunately had to leave him behind because he had one too many toes

That’s a wrap on a great week learning more of the ins and out of 3D Slicer. Thank you to the SlicerMorph team for teaching and Andras Lasso for sharing his expertise.

Made great progress on my extensions and can’t wait to bring home what I’ve learned.

Honey, I’m home!

Been visiting Friday Harbor Labs every year for the last seven years. Wasn’t going to let that streak die at 8 😤🥳

Hi, I'm Jonathan!

I study the functional morphology and evolution of fishes (how they feed and use suction cups) and salamanders (how they climb and are adapted for living in trees).

Currently a PhD candidate at George Washington University
