R. B. Kitaj was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1932. He studied at Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, New York from 1950 to 1951, at the Academy of Fine Art, Vienna from 1951 to 1952, at the Ruskin School of Drawing, Oxford from 1953 to 1959 and at the Royal College of Art, London from 1959 to 1961. Kitaj went on to teach at Camberwell School of Art from 1962 to 1966 and at the University of California, Berkeley from 1970 to 1971. He was Artist in Residence at Dartmouth College, USA from 1978 to 1979.

Kitaj was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1982. He also received Honorary Doctorates from the University of London, the Royal College of Art and Durham University in 1982, 1991 and 1996 respectively. He received the Golden Lion for Painting at the Venice Biennale in 1995 and in 1997 won the Wollaston Award for the most distinguished work in the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition.

Kitaj was elected Royal Academician in 1991 (ARA in 1984), and in 1997 moved to Los Angeles after receiving bad reviews of his 1994 Tate retrospective.
Kitaj controversially accused newspaper critics of driving his wife to her death, then took his own life in 2007. Born in Lima, New York, Hyde spent her adolescent years in California. Her art education began at the age of twelve when she studied for two years with her neighbour, Ferdinand Richardt, an American-Danish artist.

Between 1882 and 1888, Hyde continued her education by graduating from Wellesley School for Girls and attending the California School of Design. For the next six years, Hyde developed her artistic talents through her studies with Franz Skarbina in Berlin, and Raphaël Collin and Félix Régamey in Paris. Régamey introduced Hyde to the Japonism movement through his vast Japanese art collection. The paintings of Mary Cassatt, an American impressionist, were also very influential in Hyde's decision to focus on Japanese attributes in her works. Mary Cassatt's paintings were significantly inspired by Japanese works of art, and many of her paintings were women and children themes. Hyde also studied with Emil Carlsen, an American painter, and Kanō Tomonobu, the final master painter at the famous Kanō school of Japanese painting.
By 1894, Hyde had returned to California and began to sketch likenesses of Chinatown women and children. Through her association with the Sketch Club, Hyde met and became friends with Josephine Hyde. Together they attempted color etchings, and in 1899, the two Hyde women settled in Japan to study the country's painting techniques.
While Josephine Hyde returned to America, Helen Hyde continued her study in Japan in color woodblock printing. In Japan, Helen Hyde learned the Japanese woodblock printing techniques from masters such as Emil Orlik, a European living in Japan. Hyde resided in Japan from 1903 through 1913 and refined color woodblock printing to a fine art. During this time, Hyde also traveled extensively to China, India, and Mexico. Susie Ganch applied her virtuoso skills in metal and jewelry to make this monumental bracelet from discarded plastics. It includes many single-use plastics, like coffee lids, to show that long after we throw it away, plastic lives on indefinitely, becoming a drag on our ecosystems.
```Our collective detritus connects me physically to the world outside my studio while also serving as a commentary on our collective habits of consumption. From a distance they are beautiful. Up close they are dirty and covered with the evidence of their now forgotten use. With these materials, I construct pieces that are comprised of multiple interdependent parts. Often held together by tension, they have structural integrity but also flexibility and fragility. This dynamic balance mimics the cooperative nature of the universe.

Born in 1934 in Salem, Oregon, Backstand took education seriously and sought various forms of it in his early years, looking for the right match, and attending Oregon State University, University of Oregon, Boulder (Colorado), Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA), and the Slade School, University of London on a Fulbright Fellowship. The school with arguably the largest impact on his career was PNCA, where he worked as a part-time teacher of painting and life drawing between 1975 and 1986.
Backstrand’s studio was a renovated mom-and-pop grocery store on NE Alberta Street in Portland. He was one of the first artists to occupy this now lively artistic area in Portland’s northeast. He often shared his studio space with friends.
In the 1960s Backstrand began to pursue art with a vested interest in cultivating a particular style. In an interview with the U.S. State Department’s Art in Embassies team he described his inspirations during this period of his life: Francis Bacon, Rene Magritte, Ingmar Bergman, Federico Fellini, Susan Sontag, coffee houses, and cigarettes. He incorporates this mix of film, stage, and real life into his works which merge different visual elements to create a cohesive whole. Truly, his works bear his unique mark.
As he moved into the 1980s, in the same aforementioned interview, Backstrand states how his mind was opened when reading works by psychoanalyst Alice Miller and cultural anthropologist Ernest Becker. In particular, he saw poignancy in Becker’s book The Denial of Death, a book which he spoke about in an interview, emphasizing how modern society tamps down all thoughts of death rather than coming to terms with it.
