Comms and other stuff for UCL Policy Lab
We found people appreciated universities as local institutions that demonstrated global success (people were happy to have something that is leading the world).

However, there are also concerns that not all are benefiting. This is about working-class communties locked out or disrespected.

At the same time, a politics of community and belonging is waiting to be seized.

Labour is in part there with pride in place. As I say in the piece, there are signs in the polling and broader culture that this politics of place is a powerful political foundtion.

It's understandable why climate campaigners 'go big' when talking about decarbonisation but as @samalvis.bsky.social points out....ensuring we focus on the everday is vital to long-term support for net-zero. Folks aren't thinking about COP when they go to change their boiler...

I get the Guardian has quit twitter but when is the campaign to end pub queuing arriving on Blue-sky!? We can’t lose one of the great campaigns of our generation.

The report brings together amazing folks working in research and communities across Britain. There is now clear evidence that there is a growing epidemic of loneliness across the developed world, and we'll be doing more work at the UCL Policy Lab to explore and tackle it.

Successful public services reform will be driven by improving the human interactions within services.

A key message from today's UCL @instituteforgov.bsky.social public service conference.

But as Peter Hyman points ou, respect is bigger than just rhetoric. It also goes to policy - with state failure and unresponsive institutions being a key part of any reforming agenda.

There is scope for change but must be about a common good.

We found something similar in the UK. With voters feeling politics and politicans failed to ‘respect people like me’. This is particularly true for those without a college/uni degree but also goes to wealth and geography. www.ucl.ac.uk/policy-lab/n...

As Gary Gerstle said to Ezra Klein, we've neglected another track in which people's capacity for connection and hope extends well beyond policy, government, and abstract rights.

We do not dream in child tax credits or reduced NHS waiting lists, for that matter. podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/t...

The killer line from UK commentary of US election comes from Peter Hyman “There is a swamp, and it does need draining...government hasn’t performed for about 20 years, hasn’t performed on the economy for working people. It’s done what people see as unnecessary wars.”
