...and I think it's *because* these games are mainly played by people who enjoy the "historical reenactment" angle. And that includes players who have no personal history with the genre!

To say nothing of Revenge of the Joker, for that matter! Either way, Forever is by no means a shoe-in for worst Batman game on the MD, let alone a worst game contender in general.

MD Returns i think more immediately resembles a normal video game on the surface and might seem more approachable because of that, but it is definitely an infuriating game that only gets worse the further you progress. BF probably has a more satisfying curve of mastery if you can get into it imo

SNES and MD BF both have ups and downs (and both are missing stuff from the DOS game), SNES looks a little prettier but has load times and iirc less visibility due to lower resolution (+ a real stupid game breaking bug on stage 3), but ultimately neither is probably decidedly worse than the other.

I consider it "under-appreciated", and I'm very glad there is at least a second game in the extremely niche "mortal kombat exploratory platform beat 'em up" genre, but with all its flaws I'm hard pressed to call it "good". Very well worth a look, at least!

It's a goofy, obtuse, difficult and kind of abrasive game, so it's not hard to see why anyone would bounce off it very quickly. You basically need to understand the fairly convoluted move list to just being playing, and even then it's not obvious that you're meant to scour the levels for secrets.

Me and my friend who had it played that game a ton over that christmas break, I'll always have fond memories of it! It's a shame it's so difficult, because it's actually a really ambitious and interesting game - typical of Probe. A worthy swan song for my old workhorse MD.

Yeah, it was a game I got late in the MD's tenure, I think I "borrowed" a cart that I then just kinda ended up with. I didn't get to play it a lot, I remember the music being cool but mostly the game being really difficult and not all that fun.

It is kind of weird seeing the list like that though. It's a kind of weird and eclectic list, but it's also not at all representative of the years I spent lovingly playing MD games at home or at friends' places. Me and my brother both had many friends we'd frequently borrow games from

I don't think I owned all of these at one time, as I recall some trade-ins and and temp-turned-permanent swaps w/ friends, but these are the games I can recall owning until my original MD kicked the bucket around the end of 95/early 96 (my friend's xmas copy of Batman Forever was its last game, RIP)

Even if I'm not 100% on board with the art direction for either game, I do think it's encouraging that Rivals and Tôkon both seem to be getting free reignto just look like 'Chinese MOBA' and 'ASW fighting game' respectively. I'll take that over blandly realistic Rise of Hydra any day of the week!
